Last night I watched with my kids (now ages 20 and 15) the Star Trek Voyager TV movie "Scorpion." To us, it all seemed like a really good Trek movie, unlike Beyond....
Zoe Saldana on Beyond's box office "burnout":

" really hope there is [going to be another film]. It’d be crazy to limit the longevity of a show that has had a fifty year life – and on – to stop just because they...
Star Trek Beyond grossed 343m worldwide, but only c. 50% of that comes back to Paramount, for a take of c. 172m. That's close to the production budget of 185m, but those costs don't include advertising, studio overhead, etc, which is usually c. $100m for a big movie like this.
So revenue so far...
Getting back to Star Trek Beyond, how would you personally rate this film in relation to all of the other Trek movies? We have 13 so far, and although to me Beyond is dead last, it is perhaps more or less equal in awfulness to Final Frontier and Insurrection. Here's my ranking, best to worst...
Not quite in the range of your numbers, but getting up there will be the upcoming new Avatar trilogy. Since the first one cost about $250m, the three sequels together might be $750m. Publicity and overhead should take the total well over a billion dollars. If those three films grossed only half...

According to the Hollywood Reporter, yes, an expensive film that only made back about half of its costs would be a "flop."

IT'S OFFICIAL, 'STAR TREK BEYOND" IS A BOX OFFICE FLOP
ARIC MITCHELL
Star Trek Beyond hit theaters with high hopes on July 22, and following a stellar opening weekend, ran into a brick wall...
Fair enough. And when the foreign box office comes in, perhaps Beyond will end up breaking even.
But at this point I doubt it. Trek has never done as well overseas as many other franchises. Star Trek 09 got c. 33% of its revenue outside of the US. Into Darkness raised that to c. 50%, which was...
For good Trek movies, increasingly I find myself revisiting the premieres and 2-parters of TNG, DS9, Voyager, and Enterprise. And, of course the mother of all TV Trek movies is The Menagerie. The better TV Trek movies are better than more than half of the theatrical films that were released...
Box office performance needs to be considered in relation to the costs of a film.
Last year's movie "Spotlight" grossed $45 million in the US. But since it had a production budget of only about $20m, it was a modest hit in relation to its costs.
But a movie that costs $185 million, like...
True. And maybe it will do better in overseas markets.
But looking at US grosses alone we have these numbers (adjusted for inflation by box office mojo):
http://www.boxofficemojo.com/franchises/chart/?id=startrek.htm
1. Trek 09: $299m US
2. The Motion Picture: 284m
3. Voyage Home: 250m
4...
I think Beyond is a relative failure at the box office so far. Total worldwide gross is currently c. $201 million for the movie, compared to a reported production budget of $185. That would seem like a small profit, but the studio only gets about half of the gross box office take, meaning that...
Long-time Trek fan, as some of you know, but I'm joining this discussion late. Apologies. Anyway, I thought Beyond was beyond bad. Made me nostalgic for the JJA Treks, which I didn't think was possible. In retrospect I'm looking at them more kindly now. Beyond had empty and seemingly endless...
