    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

Yep, I have no doubt that within the next 5 years I'll have a UHD player....but will be playing 99% BD's and DVD's on it.

I'm a huge Bond fan, so I'll always go see a new one of those in theater. The other 4 we saw in theater were all related to our kids' birthdays. I agree that Avatar and Skyfall are both great HT experiences (I'd also recommend Inception).

Exactly. Even a modest Home Theater set-up like mine makes going to the movies, with all the attendant costs, hassles, etc, a non-starter for us. Sad in some way. I grew up (70's and early 80's) going to 2-3 movies a week. After I was married, it decreased somewhat and then increased again...

Just old school I guess....but having my favorite films sitting in a Cloud queue or residing on my hard drive is simply not as appealing as having my BD/DVD's on a shelf with artwork, etc. Kinda like having the Mona Lisa as my wallpaper vs. seeing it hanging in the Louvre.

Misunderstood your first post re: "doesn't buffer"..... :)

Directv downloads (in the background) some content (most new-to-on-demand/ppv movies) directly onto the set-top box on the partitioned part of the drive which makes it play without buffering. Not all of their "on demand" or PPV content is that way and is streamed to your set-top via the...

It's not the ISP throttling but rather Directv's slow servers. Just go to DBSTalk and you'll see lots of complaints about people with 20+ megabyte connections having issues, especially at peak times. Now, I will say it's come a long way since DOD first started in 2005 or so, but it's still not...

I have Directv and saw that......but, again, their VOD is internet-based (basically it's streaming/downloading), so depending on your ISP and what speed you have, 4k could be be problematic. I have a 24 megabyte download speed and even now Directv on Demand sometimes buffers because Directv's...

While I see 4k streaming and 4k BD, it will be while before TV becomes 4k. The networks, local stations, and cable/satelite providers just spent billions on the upgrade to HD (and in the case of broadcast stations had to be forced by the government to do so) and only broadcast in 720p or 1080i...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

What I believe you'll see is initial releases of the usual classics in 4k...."Gone with the Wind", "The Wizard of Oz", "Lawrence of Arabia", "Ben-Hur", along with new releases. But will those drive hardware sales? Doubt it. As for other content, other than streaming what is there? And how much...

+1. I will add that BD (and 3D) had the unfortunate timing to come along during the worst economic recession since the Great Depression which I have to think adversely impacted its initial penetration. I remember the late 90's when DVD came along. There was a real "WOW" factor going from VHS to...

    Article: 4K Blu-ray Discs Arriving in 2015

Exactly,....I can't find more current statistics but in 2012 (fully 5 years after BD won the format war), the penetration rate for BD players in the US was only 26% of total households, while DVD penetration rate was 91%. Source...

And therein lies the rub.....if you think back to the beginnings of HDTV and BD, they didn't didn't reach "critical" mass until flat-panels hit the sub-$1000 levels and BD players hit sub-$200 levels. It may take a while for 4k units to reach those levels. Yes, early adopters and enthusiasts...
