MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Couldn't agree more with this post! Absolutely spot-on.

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Sam - thank you. I've been a Bond fan for my entire life, and have never read a selection of reviews that I agree with more. Particularly about the ridiculous 'personal' element in every film since LTK. It's time Bond started doing his job again - and hopefully Bond 24 will deliver. Thanks...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

I don't understand all the positive comments for The Living Daylights on BD. I love the film very much (it was the first one I saw at the cinema, aged 8), but to me the transfer is terrible. Looks very video-ish, and not at all filmic. It's nowhere near as much of an improvement over the DVD...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

I agree 100%. There are certainly some titles in the set that are HUGELY problematic picture-wise (Goldeneye), and many others that, despite getting the okay from some quarters, I think look terrible (Octopussy, View), but I agree with Osato that OHMSS, Diamonds & Spy look wonderful...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Here's a very pedantic point about the packaging, so feel free to ignore it. I very much like the idea of having each film's romantic interest pictured next to the discs - and the selected images work brilliantly. HOWEVER - for World Is Not Enough, shouldn't it be Denise Richards pictured...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

I am in total agreement with the above post from Anthony Neilson. It completely sums up my feelings about this set. Rushed, not finished, but still just-about acceptable considering the cheap (-ish) price point. Realistically though, us Bond fans certainly wanted more.

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

The UK disc of Casino Royale (which I've just checked) is very different to the one advertised in the specs. It's NOT a repressing of the old 1-disc edition. It features the same menu-templates as the other discs, and is the uncut version. Special features are much more...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Hi Matt. Yes, the menus on the new 9 are exactly the same as the others - right down to the ridiculous use of terms like "MI6 Vault" and "Mission Dossier" to needlessly confuse and separate special features. The only difference is the new Fox Home Entertainment logo at start-up...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Thanks Reed - I guess I never noticed it on the previous mix (probably because back then I was listening through the TV's terrible internal speakers!). My huge problems with things like that are a) it wasn't on the original mix, so who has the right to add it, and b) it's not consistent! If you...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Just got the UK set. I've only looked at a few discs so far, but have some initial observations. So far, I can confirm that the previously unreleased UK discs DO include the original audio tracks (mono, Dolby Surround, etc). This seems to apply to the 9 new titles only. The...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Wow. I cannot believe the improvement of Spy. Absolutely stunning. The amount of extra detail is truly staggering. If only all films in the set looked this good. This, coupled with the fixes on the other titles, make the View situation even stranger. Why was the framing not fixed...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

There are some very interesting screenshot comparisons available on the Bond 50 thread at AVS. Some immediate observations: - Cropping on Goldeneye fixed, cropping on View To A Kill NOT fixed. - Grading on OHMSS and YOLT fixed. - OHMSS and DAF look great, but they exhibit...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Here's what appears to be a genuine unboxing video. As predicted, it looks as though the packaging won't take up too much shelf-space, which is definitely a good thing.

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Ray - thanks so much for helping out those of us who are starved for information on this set. It's good to hear the PQ issues are fixed. I hope the audio issues are fixed too. I've said this before, but now it seems to be confirmed it's worth repeating. I think it's outrageous that...

That's a good point - I hadn't thought of that. Thanks, Kevin. I guess in 6 days we'll know all about it anyway!

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Sorry to repeat sentiments from previous posts, but does anyone else think it's strange we've seen no reviews yet? This is a major release that's been promoted for 9 months. We're less than a week from release, and yet we still don't even have final specs, let alone reviews...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Agreed 100%. Connery's Bond films were wonderful, but his continued contempt for the character that effectively gave him his career is astonishing. I remember his shocking statement about Cubby Broccoli - the man to whom Connery owes pretty much everything. Words to the effect of: "If his brain...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Absolutely - hopefully any day now! Very curious to find out if the UE errors are fixed. Also, I'm very interested to know whether the original burnt-in captions/subtitles are included. I really hope they are...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

It's possibly worth taking those Amazon specs with a pinch of salt - they also state MWTGG's aspect ratio to be 2.35:1, which is wrong. The coding information could well be accurate, but Amazon have been known to be wrong before with their pre-release specs. It's a shame MGM/Fox...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Definitely. I guess I'm in the minority opinion, but the Moore films are definitely my favourites. Perhaps it's because those were the films I grew up with, but I love them. The fact they don't take themselves 100% seriously is a huge bonus. One of my biggest problems with the Craig films...

Sounds promising Osato - I hope you're right! I'm looking forward to the 24th Sept (UK release) too, but with a certain amount of trepidation...

I agree 100%. The 'On Location' featurettes were great, with fantastic VO work from Maud Adams!

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Of course! I'd forgotten about that screw-up. Yet another example of a film being 'restored' by people with no knowledge whatsoever of how the film originally looked, and no regard whatsoever for the filmmakers' intentions.

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Thanks for the great post Spencer. Reading all that (and looking at the fascinating comparisons) makes me very nervous about the Bond 50 set. I simply don't believe that they've addressed all these concerns. Fortunately, I still have the SE DVDs from 1999-2000. I was looking forward to...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

There were proven issues with the original UE DVD versions. Incorrect grading (Thunderball, YOLT, OHMSS, LALD), incorrect audio mix (OHMSS) & incorrect framing (AVTAK, Goldeneye). Plus, Goldeneye's title sequence was the television broadcast-safe version, with all the text towards the centre of...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

I completely agree. I have a lot more respect for the BBFC now than I did during the James Ferman days. They've finally realised that, for the most part, adults should be able to choose what they want to watch. However, the increasing commentary in the Consumer Advice, and Extended...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

Very true, but you forgot one crucial difference: Diamonds Are Forever is a good film. The same comparison can be made between You Only Live Twice and The Spy Who Loved Me. Both those films are fantastic though, so it really doesn't matter that the plots are almost identical. Die Another...

MGM Press Release: BOND 50 (Blu-ray)

In their newest annual report, the BBFC have stated a reason for the upgrades. At the time, they had a simple choice between rating these films 'A', or 'AA'. Because 'AA' was effectively the same as today's '15', which the films definitely didn't merit, they went with the lower option. Had '12'...
