    If you're talking about VHS, it's because VHS cannot be anamorphic. So the material from VHS should not be watched in FULL mode on your set. You should either watch it in 4:3 mode, boxed on all 4 sides- or use the letterbox zoom function which will crop away the unused bars, maintain geometry...
