    The Abyss

Can't really say anything about the A/V assets, Geoff. To be honest, no one has approached me at all about "The Abyss". But I do know that any anamorphic transfer or remix that may be out there now would not be official. V

Thanks for the feedback, Peter. The challenge is dealing with the fact that there is a wide gap between the capabilities of low-end players versus high-end players, so the same disc has to play in both types. The simplest solution is to minimize the menus and graphics, which will probably be...

Alisdair, you are correct that we'd have to retransfer both the SE version and select TH scenes (or vice versa) in tandem in order to have the components to branch the versions...there's a LOT of work involved. Greg, I agree with your sentiments, but everyone has their own priorities, and for...

    The Abyss

The Abyss was shot in Super-35 with a 2.35 aspect ratio. The only reason there has never been an anamorphic DVD of the film is that Jim has never yet approved an HD transfer of the film... the only approved transfer available right now is the letterboxed 4x3 transfer we did back in 1992...

Mike and Michael: I agree that the VFX retro would be great... let's hope we can do it when the time comes... Yes, the "Under Pressure" doc was mostly shot on video (3/4" and even some VHS!) with a smattering of 16mm material. I doubt we'll be able to redo it in HD. As for the cut "Rat"...

    The Abyss

Thanks to all for the kind words... if it works out that I work on The Abyss for Blu-ray, I'll do my best to include everything and more... working on the film was one of the formative experiences of my life and I will always try to do right by it. Michael, I'm sure you know Jim Cameron has the...

    The Abyss

Tony, there's no way to estimate... if he wants to retransfer, it might take weeks... if he wants to just do color tweaks, then at least a few days. But the real unknown factor is when he can get to even looking at things. Getting his attention for any length of time at this point when he's...

    The Abyss

Alex, it's funny you should mention that about the aliens-and-nuclear-peace theme... I think I actually pointed out to Jim Cameron back in production that while this "classic" 20th-century story theme was key in such greats as "The Day the Earth Stood Still" (the original version, of course!)...

    The Abyss

David, I don't think it was directly inspired by Alan Silvestri's score for The Abyss... I kind of hear some echoes of John Williams' Close Encounters music in there as well... it was something Dolby provided to us as a finished trailer. Hope this answers your question... V

Nope, no one found the easter egg of my dog, who sadly has since moved up to the kennel in the sky (it happened back in 2004 during my prodcing the SW Trilogy set). I've actually forgotten how to find him on the "Abyss" DVD now...but he does show up as an easter egg on the T2 Extreme DVD...

    The Abyss

Greg, it's harder than you think to tie him down to watch something, especially if it's a master transfer... it's not like popping in a DVD at his office and checking it out... it's about viewing it in a pro environment like a transfer bay directly off of the D5. Obviously, he wants to take his...

    The Abyss

Ray, Blu-ray can absolutely allow for easier navigation... it all comes down to design and layout. I've been working on that kind of thing in theory, and am just waiting for a good opportunity to implement it... so I'm hoping that we can move forward on "The Abyss" on Blu-ray one of these...

    The Abyss

The VFX for The Abyss were completed on film, since the Special Edition version of the movie had a limited theatrical release in 1993. The VFX for Aliens was mostly completed on film, but some composites were completed only in standard-def during online... although this may have been corrected...

    The Abyss

No flame suit required, Man... ;-) The real question is, why does the ending not work for you and what better ending would you expect to see? Does the ending not work narratively, or just visually, or both? If it's just that the NTI Ark looks incongruous in daytime on the surface with the...

    The Abyss

We're all in agreement on that, Todd! In fact it HAS been remastered for 16x9, but is awaiting Jim Cameron's review and approval. Until that happens, no movement on doing the BD. In the meantime, what features would you folks like to see on a BD version? V
