The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

Seriously? "Marxist feminist token"? "Woke hive mind dominating"? Why would a left wing commie like me be remotely interested in reading something like that?

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I've seen 95 on your list, Walter. Remaining unseen are Miller's Crossing, A River Runs Through It, City Of God, Grave Of The Fireflies and Koyaanisqatsi. A lot of your titles almost made my list. It killed me to leave Chinatown off but as I said, on another day, it may well be on it.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

Yes, 100 movies tied is too much but I couldn't rank! ;)

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

On another day, North By Northwest could easily have made it. A great movie. It would easily make my second 100. And as great a pleasure Casablanca have given me through the years (and continues to give), I just can't call it "great" in the literal sense, just the casual sense.

I knew I shouldn't have left Jeanne Dielman off ;)

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

Just for fun, I put together my own 100 "greatest" movies ever made list. However, unlike the S&S and most lists I didn't rank them. How can one say that The Maltese Falcon is better than Double Indemnity and thus ranked higher. Or Psycho better than All About Eve? What's the difference that...

Well, it does have Jane Wyatt swimming in the nude!

It would be on my list!!! Infinitely preferable to the creaky 1937 Capra version.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

A good thing about the internet is that it allows us to make contact with other film lovers who feel as we do about cinema. In my "real" life I have friends who love movies but for the most part they're Hollywood product. I have zero interest in stuff like Top Gun: Maverick, Black Panther...

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

Wow! I guess that makes me a pretentious smug highbrow troll then because I find the S&S list infinitely more fascinating than the middle class collection that the AFI lists. Raiders Of The Ark, Rocky, Forrest Gump, The Sixth Sense, The Graduate, It's A Wonderful Life, Mr. Smith Goes To...

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I was discussing the S&S list with a friend who lives in Chicago and he sent me this e-mail: "A lot of critics embrace what they consider the antithesis to the post-70s Hollywood output. So they promote slow cinema (which can be great). One critic once applauded a film for putting him to sleep...

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I love MGM musicals and while I can see Singin' In The Rain and The Band Wagon on the list and maybe Meet Me In St. Louis, one shudders at the thought of Nancy Goes To Rio, The Belle Of New York, Lady Be Good or Babes On Broadway making a 100 greatest films list.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

And I suspect if we here at the HTF undertook our own 100 greatest movies ever made poll, it would be Hollywood (or at least English language) and male centric and more mainstream.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I think there's a split between movie lovers/buffs and movie cineastes and the conversation around the 2022 S&S list accents the difference. Some are upset that movies like Star Wars, Jaws, Wizard Of Oz or Snow White And The Seven Dwarfs are not on the list while obscure films like Jeanne...

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

And that may well account for Jeanne Dielman's placing if more women were brought in. We're male centric here at the HTF and I've noticed that generally speaking members aren't predisposed to films with female protagonists (unless they're action films like Wonder Woman, Aliens, Scarlett...

Anything that gets people to investigate films they haven't seen or engage in (civil) discussion is a good thing.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

Totally disagree! The Stahl film is very good. The Sirk film is a masterpiece. A searing look at racism and motherhood (and not in a flattering light) during a repressive decade. And it's better acted.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

While I'll never sit through them again, Schindler's List and 12 Years A Slave are films that need to be watched at least once.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

Two films that I'll never watch again are Schindler's List and 12 Years A Slave. Both excellent films but literally too painful for me to watch.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I didn't find A Clockwork Orange offensive in the least. I just thought it a pretentious bore. No doubt there will be those who think, "Well, he just didn't get it". I got it all right, I just didn't want it. Unlike, say, Lawrence Of Arabia which I also find a bit of a bore, I totally get what...

At least, Barry Lyndon had an intermission (replicated on the DVD/blu ray) to give you a break.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

For me, other films have done it better: The Deer Hunter, The Thin Red Line, The Victors, None But The Brave to name just a handful.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

My dislike for A Clockwork Orange knows no bounds and I'm not a fan of The Shining (the best thing about it is Shelley Duvall). That one leaves me cold, too. I think the S&S list got it right with 200l and Barry Lyndon, two of his very best. I wouldn't object to Lolita being on the list either.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I disagree. It's not "much better than the main one" or "A much stronger list". It's simply a different list (equally valid) and obviously one geared more to your own cinematic sensibilities.

The Prestigious Sight & Sound Poll (2022) The 100 Greatest Films Of All Time

I know you're being humorous but anyone going in expecting a film about prostitution is going to be disappointed. And Klute would get my vote as the "greatest" film about prostitution. As a thriller, it sucks but as a character portrait of a hooker, it's superb!

It means what I said. I don't think it's your kind of movie. Simple as that. Somehow I don't think watching Delphine Seyrig (with her back toward the camera) silently washing dishes for five minutes is your idea of a stimulating movie. But I could be wrong ;) and would love it if I was.

Reputedly, Howard Hawks and John Wayne hated that aspect of High Noon so much, they made Rio Bravo to counteract it.
