    Thoughts on Buffy: Season 2

Oh arses!! I posted last night and must have closed the window instead of clicking post or something.:b Okay: checked out the eps and the stuff is there. Didn't notice before because my TV overscan is pretty harsh. On the other hand it is obvious - guess I wasn't paying too much...

Hmm. Odd. I'll check that at home. I'm guess my overscan is too huge for me to notice, then... Without movement I assumed that the blobs in the first were the doors, close and out of focus, and the blobs in the second were some sort of railings, I guess!!

I don't see what we're not meant to see in shots 1 and 2. Particularly (1) where we get sense of space. Even in a standard movie filmed for widescreen there isn't a necessity that all action stretches across the screen. Pan & Scan 'zooms' don't always have to miss vital bits of the action...

You see, I just don't like people with only one shoulder... :)

Well I'd be interested to know Jeff: Which did you prefer for Season 4? The widescreen or the TV-ratio version? (I seem to remember you saying you had Season 4 imported.) Which version looked better?

But that's the point. There are two OARs whatever you may think and in fact, 4x3 is a crop of the original. Joss doesn't actually direct that many episodes. We've had this discussion many many times before and the whole 'Joss likes it TV' has been said those times. Fact remains that you'll...

Ken - it's not at all. If you compare them you'll see immediately how 'chopped at the sides' everything is in later seasons. Compare shots in the first two seasons to shots in later seasons and you'll see that the director is definitely looking at a 16:9 frame, and composing for that. The...

Well beat my arse blue with an Elephant's trunk...but I don't actually mind Riley particularly. ;) Certainly rates higher than Dawn in my book!! :D

The Greenwalt commentary is not useless. It's just not a good commentary. It has little flow, and he fails to realise you are watching the episode and you (almost certainly) know it very well - we don't need him telling you what's happening, that's all.:)

Yeah, when you have a POV shot from the locker - lots of black. Looks bloody awful.:frowning:

It's in more than just one ep. Every one on the first disc was like that, I believe...

In the UK S2's video quality was definitely of a lower standard than S1's. There was also a chapter screw up on the discs without supplements where the start of the first chapter past the credits was set 'into' the scene rather than just after the credits.
