thx for the info james ... that's what i seem to notice as well. i really like the idea of a company that keeps on top of their firmware ... that shows some commitment.
has anyone heard of any audio-synch issues with the LGDVB418? i bought one and had the problem at home, whether using component or hdmi. then i noticed in the store that we had another demoing some material ... and it also had an audio-synch issue. needless to say, mine will be returned. i'm...
np dave. if you wait a month or so...then check the website....the article might be listed. i think the website often does that (list older articles after the magazine has been released).
best buy is carrying the new samsung 850. it looks pretty much identical to the 841. iirc, the 841 did N0T have the dcdi chip....so i assume the 850 doesn't either. can anyone confirm/deny?
hey folks, just noticed on the samsung website they're listing some new upconverting dvd players -- the 850 & 950. http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/n...on+DVD+Players any word on those?
dave h - in the latest issue of soundandvision mag, david ranada has an article about the whole blue-ray/hd-dvd compatibility issue. interesting read...
at this point, i don't think so. i believe they use fundamentally different technologies (one of them requires a whole different production method, one of them just requires some retooling of the current manufacturing process), so i'm not sure how practical/possible a universal player is? but...
dave - chuck pretty much nailed the way i feel as well. 1. hd dvd players are gonna be costly 2. another stupid format war will preclude me from buying at this point, since you have a samsung dlp, you should definitely look into a upconverting dvd player. i found the picture quality to...
i don't think (but am not sure) that the 841 upconverts over component. if that's the case, then the tv will do it when using the component connections. since the hln series does not (again, i'm not positive) have the faroudja chip, i suppose it would be best to let the 841 do the scaling via dvi.
craig, i don't recall if the hln series (you are aware that's the old model right?) upconverts everything to 720p or not. the side question is, if you hook these two pieces up, and the tv *does* upconvert to 720p, which piece of gear is actually doing what? is the dvd upconverting (via dvi)...
k..looks like the tosh 5970 is out. how about the lg 418? avs threads look a little more promising on this one. http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showt...79#post4757679
that sounds odd kevin. the 841 combined with the dlp should yield a surprisingly good picture. my friend has a similar setup (she has the hl-p series), which looks solid. what dvd's are you using? how did you set everything up? are you using a decent dvi cable? [edit] - the bravo is only...
i also think you'll benefit from an upscaling dvd player. since (i assume) you've read this thread, you know the "risks". but i think it's worth the effort. it'll give you a good idea about what improvement you're likely to see. plus, if you don't like it, you can always return it.
yeah, i read the avs links, but wanted to ask here. i haven't heard about it non upscaling commercial discs though ... that doesn't make sense. were you doing it over dvi or component. this one only upconverts via dvi.
has anyone checked out the lg dvd/hd tuner unit? http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage...52&type=product looks kinda interesting. i may have to check it out. i suspect the dvd performance is average, but having a hi-def tuner built in is kinda cool.
question on that. if the dlp scales everything to 720p, what happens if it's being sent a 1080i input? if it's scaled to 720p, it seems like that signal is getting an awful lot of processing...
about that darn faroudga chip .... i talked with a guy at magnolia hi-fi today. i asked him about upsconverting dvd players and the dcdi chip. he said the chip only works when the players output via component *at* 480p. i thought that sounded odd, but thought i'd ask you all. if that's...
yeah, i'm hearing the same thing. the only reason i was so gung-ho to get it was because i could use my bb discount, but now i'm not sure it's worth it. i may have to check out some of the other players in the market.
yeah, i was wondering that. i thought it would still be better to use the dvi as there was one less conversion? also, i did do some comparing between comp and dvi. the dvi pic was a little brighter and the curves just a touch smoother. it was close, but i was pretty sure the dvi...
