I did eventually purchase a Sony portable blu ray player to replace an almost identical Sony DVD only portable. There was nothing wrong with the DVD player and I was able to sell it on line to recover some of the cost.
This blu ray portable is very useful for playing Blu rays of movies as I am...
I am puzzled. Can you actually buy a DVD only player anymore? I have one "good" Blu-ray player attached to my best TV, but at $50.00 for a cheap Samsung Blu ray player, I've got these all over the house in spare bedrooms, kitchen etc. I have had almost no trouble with these and if they break...
The entire point of me starting this thread was that 3D was the major reason I found blu rays of value. I probably have over a hundred 3D discs, classics and new, and pick up everything I can find if it is a good price. (I even picked up "Life of Pi" in 3D, although I thought the movie was...
The difference between DVD and VHS was real and dramatic. The difference between DVD and Blu-ray was not, with many people hard pressed to see any difference at all. I am not talking about electronics experts, but "regular people". I remember talking to my cousins, for instance, who decided to...
I was born in 1951 myself, and grew up in a time when just about every TV station (we received about 8 from Detroit and Toledo!) played classic movies on the weekend and after 11:30 during the week. I became addicted especially to musicals and comedians of the 1930s.
Today we subscribe to TCM...
My threat to give up blu rays again stems from my disappointment in the lack of 3D support. The picture quality although nice, really isn't an issue for me.
I fell for the larger screen trap as well. No one said "buy this much larger screen and your entire collection of DVDs will look like crap and have to be replaced"
My point was that the main feature for which I had purchased my system and Blu rays was 3D. I do not find the difference, although visible, so dramatic that blu ray is necessary without 3D.
When I switched to DVD from VHS originally the difference was dramatic. Now DVD to Blu ray is nice, but...
Knock yourself out, but how many average people who don't have money or equipment to set up gigantic home theatres feel the difference is unnoticeable. They are busy craining their necks to see the 45" tv they have mounted above their fire place.
It's not that I see no difference. I was contemplating replacing my Chaplin DVDs, with Blu Rays, when I read a review of one of them. The author was all excited because behind Chaplin at one point was a poster on a wall, and you could see all the wrinkles on the poster clearly! Who cares? If...
I have been rather distressed lately by all the evidence that manufacturers have decided to give up on 3D for the home. First it was no new televisions with the feature and increasingly discs of movies shown in 3D in the theatre are being only released flat in North America or you can order and...
