Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I saw the book at Borders and looked through it. Nice pictures but agree that it appears some actors/films were glossed over. For kicks I looked up who was arguably Warners' most notorious male pre-code star in the index: Warren William. He gets a once sentence mention in the entire book and it...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Agree that a Casablanca reissue only makes sense for the Blu Ray release. WHV mocked other studios for double dips not too long ago and said something to the effect that they wouldn't be issuing "Casablanca - the letters of transit edition". For SD owners, the current set supplemented by the...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Perfectly said. The inclusion of two Charlie McCarthy shorts in this set makes it even more attractive.

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Agree. I doubt there will be "TONS" of Q4 releases this year. There will be some high profile releases targeted towards the Christmas giving season, but I'd be surprised if after the general slowdown we've seen for the reasons noted above that all of a sudden the floodgates opened. I've always...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Thanks, Eric. The announcements I was referring to were not the unofficial HTF chat announcements but the "official" press releases that WHV would issue about 3 month in advance of the actual release date. The noir collections have become annual events and WHV was quoted in an article a year...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

The first 4 Warner Noir volumes were all released in July of their respective years with the official announcements having been made several months prior (quick research shows Vol 4 was announced in April 2007 andd Vol 2 in March of 2005). There has been no announcement, or even solid rumors...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Great to finally get the long rumored legit (and presumably restored) version of This is the Army. I'm not a big fan of musicals but between ARMY and the sheer starpower of the other two this is a must have set. Thanks, Warner, for this pleasant surprise! Also, for those interested, "Movie...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Classics announcements seem to be down in general presumably due to economic factors. Fox hasn't updated their Fox Studio Classics website in months. In the meantime I plan to enjoy Forbidden Hollywood 2 and tomorrow's Gangster 3 set. WHV also has several sets coming out in the next couple of...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

There has been some discussion about how the softening DVD market (and a struggling economy in general) may be impacting the quanity of releases from WHV. This article from Home Media Magazine quotes an analyst predicting that 2008 DVD sales will decline 5%. For reference the 2007 decline was...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

Agree with above. I don't agree that WHV has been "protected" from criticism though. Many of their biggest supporters, myself included, have offered constructive criticism in the past some of which has been addressed by the studio. For example, there were complaints about box sets mixing...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I'd like to echo the thanks to Mr. Hunt for seeking and receiving clarification on this. This obviously makes a huge difference in the projected 2008 output from WHV. I completely understand WHV not wanting to reveal specific titles/dates but it is good to know that the classic DVD market is...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

I'm normally very upbeat and have been a big WHV supporter both verbally and financially, but I have to agree that most of the posts in this thread are not whiny or moaning. Many of the titles that are mentioned are ones that WHV themselves indicated were coming in prior chats. As others...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

From the looks of this article at IFMagazine.com there isn't a whole lot more coming that what was initially listed in the press release. I wonder if the classic DVD market has gotten that soft that they needed to pull back. If new to DVD releases are truly going to be a bit more than 50 in...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

The puzzling thing is this part of the release: This implies that Warners' output will be significantly reduced this year. I highly doubt that will be the case but it begs the question as to why this number was quoted in the press release and why so many repackages and previously announced...

Speculation for Warner Bros. 85th Anniversary Celebration

We all know how often dates change though and given that their publicity department is probably working overtime dealing with the fallout over the HD-DVD abandonment it is quite understandable that they would want to wait until things settle down a bit before announcing the 85th anniversary plans.
