Yeah I agree. Having said that, these would make great gifts if you know someone who likes the film. I think the next time I buy Casablanca will be the Blu-ray.
DailyTech - Sales of Blu-ray Disc Not Enough to Stop Home Video Slump It makes sense to me that when the economy turns bad, people spend more of their money on basics, rather than luxury items like DVDs. Of course, I just reclassify DVDs to basics to get around that dilemma. :D
I just searched on rec.arts.movies.tech, and it looks like they are using the Cinerama elements, but then using a computer to join the elements as seamlessly as possible. Apparently specialised Hewlett Packard computers are being used to do it: More info here: HP Labs - Movie makeover ...
Wait for the SEs of An American in Paris and How the West Was Won. The new versions should offer much improved quality. Paris is being scanned ultra resolution, and How the West from 65mm, rather than the current version which is from 35mm.
I woke up this morning and have two emails from DVDPacific saying that my pre-orders have been automatically canceled because the items are discontinued. :frowning:
They are still on my pre-order list. I'm just going to leave them there, I imagine DVDpacific will cancel them when the release date passes without them being released. Warner should issue a press release clarifying whether or not they are coming out.

I agree that it can be hard to ask a question. I am so far away, and there is so much lag in my connection that I have to start "yoing" a few seconds before I see the request for yoing! Else I end up 40th. Perhaps a better system would be if we have a thread where we all list our question...
I just read the section of the Bits post about how blu-ray releases of classic titles can't be expected to look like the releases of newly made films. I hope that Warner include some kind of written explanation on the packaging to that effect. Something like "This High Definition transfer has...
Martin Hart of widescreenmuseum.com fame has suggested in rec.arts.movies.tech that Warner are going to offer both a smilebox and regular letterboxed version of the film. Maybe the Ultimate Edition will offer both transfers, whereas the S.E. will only have the letterboxed version? Either...
Warner could do an Allied Artists Westerns box. They are generally short films so they could put two on a DVD to keep costs down. There's lots with Joel McCrea, including Jacques Tourner's Western Wichita.
