NHL 2005-2006 Season Game On! Discussion

Mark, I couldn't remember exactly how the old Hartford Whaler logo looked. Also, I do seem to recall the Plymouth team "modernizing" it a few seasons ago, now that you mention it. Anyway, the Whaler games are still good, inexpensive entertainment.

The Whale logo is alive and well here in suburban Detroit. The Plymouth Whalers of the Ontario Junior Hockey League are owned by Peter Karmanos, who also happens to be the owner of the Carolina Hurricanes (and owned them when they were in Hartford, too). The Whalers' arena is five minutes...

I think Orr's legacy goes beyond actual numbers. He re-defined the position of defenseman and what could be expected from that position. Gretzky could certainly be thought of in a similar respect. He put up offensive numbers that went so far beyond what anyone thought was possible before him.

When I used the term "all around game", I wwas thinking of offensive play since we were talking about scoring stats. But, yes, Gretzky could be considered the "Deion Sanders" of the NHL -- a no contact player in a contact sport.

I'm sure Gretzky's average was over two per game until he started slowing down in his later years, too. Regardless, Wayne and Mario's totals on a per game basis are very close -- and certainly head and shoulders above anyone else. As you said, Bossy was a scoring machine, too. However, I...

While they played in another era, I would still add Howe and Richard to that list. They were certainly the best of the "Original Six" era. Looking at the stats link Christ provided, Gretzky averaged almost 2 points per game (1.92), Lemieux averaged 1.88, and nobody else is much over one point...

I shudder every time I think about the career numbers that Mario could have posted had he been healthy for most of his career. Between the injuries and battle with Hodgkin's, so much of his prime playing time was lost. It's also sad to note that this is the first post to this thread since the...

Comcast is supposed to show the OLN games in HD on INHD or INHD2. I'm not sure it will be all the OLN games, though.

Don't give up hope. There are lots of teams in cities that do not care about hockey -- Atlanta, Raleigh, Miami, etc. I'm sure one will be looking to relocate in a couple of years.

The NHL has a contract with NBC, but they will only be showing 6 regular season games and a few playoff games. Even the first two games of the Stanley Cup Finals will not be on NBC -- those games will be on OLN. The deal includes no guaranteed money for the NHL -- the network will share any...

Considering that poker gets better TV ratings that the NHL, I doubt that Comcast will build a sports network giant around the NHL.

If Comcast puts some of the games on INHD I will be happy. The main attraction to ESPN covering the games (for me, at least) was the chance that some would be broadcast in HD. Hopefully they will not crop the picture, though, like they have done in the past for the NCAA hockey games shown on...

Paul, I know that Comcast owns OLN. However, SportsChannel was owned by one of the major eastern cable companies, too, and that didn't work out too well. I just do not think that OLN is on the radar of the public (heck, I do not even know what channel it's on with my Comcast cable system)...

NHL 2005-2006 Season Game On! Discussion

I heard on the radio this morning that the NHL has awarded cable broadcast rights to OLN, taking their bid for more money over one from ESPN. I think this is a mistake, taking more short term money but getting a lot less TV exposure on an obscure network. The NHL did the same thing several...

They picked up Thibault, who's not a bad goalie, IMO. He was stuck on a horrible team in Chicago.

Quality goaltending is critical to winning a Cup. Losing Khabibulin is a major blow to Tampa.

I never considered Coffey a "defenseman", either. He was really a forward playing out of position. He was the NHL's version of Deion Sanders -- a defensive player who never made a tackle or hit anyone.

Instead, baseball ignored its juiced players after the strike, increasing the number of home runs being hit and ruining its record book. Personally, I like most of the rules changes -- even the shootout. However, I thought the league had eliminated it's stupid rule of awarding a point to an...
