Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

This is a very fine line that is being walked here. First, Toshiba was cooking up this technology long before they folded HD-DVD. I first heard about this new player a year ago. While I agree that Blu-ray is the best medium for watching film, I don't necessarily condone what Toshiba...

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

Crawdaddy, I am just as pessimistic about all this as you are. However, just to be on the side of caution, I have no idea what sort of software advancements are available and just "how close" Toshiba is capable of making upconverted DVDs look to HD. Based on what Toshiba is touting...

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

Scoot, If you read the initial reports it said that they were a few months away from unveiling this technology. It's no lie. We should have a first-hand look at this in September while out at CEDIA. We'll report back just how good this software really is.

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

Listen....in no way, shape or form am I standing behind Toshiba's claims. None of us can because we haven't seen what they have for ourselves. I can tell you this... Parker and I heard about this technology almost a year ago. In fact, it was Parker who brought it to my attention as he...

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

Kevin, I couldn't agree with you more. I thoroughly enjoy watching films on Blu-ray. In fact, seconds ago I just watched Cloverfield for the very first time and immensely enjoyed the BR presentation. That being said, my Blu-ray player is already outdated thanks to the fact that it's...

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

Rick, One of the counter arguments I have to your post is that this can very well not fail because it is not another HD format going head-to-head with Blu-ray. Toshiba can do this alone because, unlike HD-DVD, they need no studio support nor that of any hardware manufacturers. Simply...

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

John, The political analogy was not necessary. I understand what you were trying to say, but I wish you did it without going there. Listen.... I think this Toshiba player is more dangerous than you may think. The general public is still not sold on Blu-ray. If you introduce a...

Is the format war about to resurface? Does Toshiba have the Blu-ray killer?

For the past few months I have been hearing about software technology that Toshiba claims will take an ordinary DVD and upscale it to the exact standards of a Blu-ray disc. Now what I just posted above is basically the way it was described to me. My first thoughts were that with the...
