To each his own. I liked the film and will buy it on 4K/UHD disc, but I don't love it. Perhaps I will with future viewings. By the way, what does being in the film industry has to do with it?
I'm disappointed that This is Me didn't win. Anyhow, I'm not into the Oscars any longer and haven't been for some time as too many inferior nominees win the awards. I like Shape of Water, but, I don't consider it Best Picture material. Besides some visuals, I think it's overrated.

I'm not so sure about that as I can see many female actors thinking that way, but also many other actors including females giving del Toro the edge because of the very visual film he directed that took it to a place more directors wouldn't dare go there .
Today, it was Darkest Hour with MP. I enjoyed it thoroughly so I don't quite understand the negativity towards it. Perhaps, it's because I'm a history buff so I was into the film more so than some other people. A great performance by Oldman.
Well, The Shape of Water has some really good acting performances with some outstanding visuals. It's a 4 out of 5 movie for me. I wouldn't be surprise if it wins Best Director due to visuals and good acting performances, but I wouldn't vote it for Best Picture.
If you haven't see all the nominees then you're taking a chance reading this thread as some of these films have been out for months. This thread is designated "Discussion Thread" which means movies are going to to be discuss in detail. Also, Lady Bird has been showing since September around...
I'm worried that Phantom Thread won't play in my area before the show. The same with Call Me By Your Name. I'm seeing The Shape of Water later today in now my favorite "recliner" movie theater.:) After that, Darkest Hour probably tomorrow which leaves only the two titles I previously noted.
Today, I visited the closest theater that was playing Lady Bird which was about 15-20 miles from my house. I haven't been to that theater in about two years as they built a new cinema just about 5-6 minutes from my home. Anyway, they redid this theater with recliner chairs and such that were...
Well, I was wrong! I really enjoyed this film and think it's a very good film. I loved the writing, acting and direction. I'm kind of a sucker for films that deal with parent/child relationships. I teared up when her mother left her at the airport and refuse to see her off. I had a...
I'm the same way, I usually don't spend much time harping on the negative towards films I don't like as I'm about the same age and have more important things to say than rain on somebody else's parade about a particular film. I might register my negative opinion as various opinions are good to...
After making that half-kidding comment, I guess people ignore my winkie ;) and just focused on the not BP material line. As I stated it's a good film, but after my second viewing with the audio commentary it's more than that now. Something tells me I'm going to think more highly of it than...
Wow, Mike Frezon laying down the hammer!:)
I'm going to see Lady Bird tomorrow, but I have a feeling I'm going to be disappointed too for those same reasons Mike noted in his post.
I haven’t watched Dunkirk yet, but Get Out is finally scratched off my list. I started listening to the audio commentary so I’ll finish it before the end of the week. IMO, it’s a good film, but I don’t think it’s BP material because I kept yelling at my OLED to get the F*** Out.;)
Like I stated, I haven't seen it yet so I'm looking forward to judging it for myself. I understand your comments, but should that be the reason why it deserves to win over the other selections that might be better films. I plan on seeing all of the nominees before the show.
I'm going to watch Dunkirk again in the next 48 hours to see if my initial opinion of it holds up. I suspect my opinion is that it's a really good film with some outstanding sequences.
Also, I've never seen Get Out. I expect to correct that in the next 48 hours with no football on Sunday.
