I'm waiting on my copy to arrive after finally finding a purchasing price that fit my budget. I always loved this film, it's not quite The Wild Bunch to me, but it's an excellent western.
I'm going to watch this film again because it's a very good introspect of real characters and how they deal with life, especially, when life deals you adversity and tragedy to overcome. My next viewing will be with the audio commentary from the writer/director of the film.
Yes, the look on Loy's face when Nick shoots out the window is classic to me.
You should watch the other films in the following order:
After the Thin Man
Another Thin Man
Shadow of the Thin Man
The Thin Man Goes Home
Shadow of the Thin Man
The second film with a young Jimmy Stewart is very good. The butler scene in that film is very funny and has been copied many time over in more recent films. Also, really enjoy the third film with Dum Dum.
As to the first Thin Man film, the scene on Christmas morning always cracks me up. The look on Myrna Loy's face is classic after Powell does something I did when I was a kid. I try to watch that film every Christmas and did so again this past holiday.
Ron,
In regard to Battleground, the ending scene with what's left of their platoon marching down that road past replacement troops is one of hell of a scene. It kind of tears me up.
Film appreciation is subjective, but comedy genre is very subjective which is why I'm hesitant to recommending comedies. Every person's sense of humor is unique to them. What I might find very funny doesn't necessarily tickle another person's funny bone.
That's what I get for recommending a comedy. I won't do that again! Also, I shouldn't expect a person of today to watch a 77 year old film and think they would have the same affinity for it that I do, when I first viewed this film as a kid.
Today, I watched Battteground on Blu-ray. An excellent WW II film with an outstanding cast of actors many of you will recognize from film and TV. Actors from Dennis the Menace's Dad to Marshal Dillon was represented as well as Daktari, Fantasy Island and even Our Gang films.:) That's just a...
A double-feature today. First up was The Undying Monster followed by The Lodger. I was very pleased with Kino's BD releases. I really love John Brahm directed films. Laird Cregar's performance in The Lodger was excellent and should be noted in this thread. I hope Hangover Square is released...
To get this discussion back on track to film recommendations. I recommend the following film noirs which are on Blu-ray.
Pitfall
Cry Danger
Another film noir recommendation is 99 River Street that I'm about to view on Blu-ray for the first time as I want to listen to the Eddie Muller...
Ron,
I have another recommendation that is a 2007 film that you may not have viewed yet. I was channeling surfing today and came across it so I decided to watch it again so I pulled the Blu-ray out from my collection. The film is Michael Clayton starring George Clooney, Tom Wilkinson and...
Ron,
Most people will not have a problem with the video quality of this Blu-ray. It's far from perfect, but it's not a disaster either. Anyway, it's what we do on forums such as ours, we critique every little detail on these Blu-ray releases so in 95% of them, there will be some kind of issue...
Frank,
I wouldn't do that now. It's a very good western to me and it might be an excellent one to you as film appreciation is subjective. No question, it's a western that doesn't have a long list of better ones.
