Because the general public isn't exactly buying these classic release like hot cakes. If people want more classic films released on BD then we the general public needs to show the studios there is a healthy market for them.
Don't assume that Spielberg and Lucas don't contribute to film restoration projects. Many individuals make charitable contributions, but choose to remain anonymous. It happens more than you think.
As to the The Tin Star, unless you have some inside information you're making another...
If it's several levels above Mr. O'Neil then perhaps it's not even a Universal executive making that decision which is troubling as Comcast knows nothing about film restoration.
Another question that needs answering as I can't believe a guy like Bob O'Neil would allow a title like this one to end up with lost elements.

The question is how much is the overall restoration and preservation budget at Universal? I have a feeling their yearly budget is several million, but maybe not double digit millions which is quite low when you realize how many classic films are under their control.
It's pretty sad, but that's what happens when you have non-creative people with a bean-counter mentality in charge of selling this kind of artform. They have little or no appreciation of the art treasure under their control and only care about the bottom line.

RAH,
I couldn't agree with you more based on what I observed last week in LA. There is no way certain Universal executives in charge of actual restoration of elements have to be happy that they released a product not up to their individual standards. The life in a corporate world forces...
It will be interesting to see how many of us agree with you guys. Of course, many of us aren't looking at this title with the same perspective as you or RAH. It might be frustrating to say the least for you guys as some will likely dismiss certain deficiancies that are obvious and thus...
In fairness to Universal, they did answer about five questions, but most of them were directed towards the Monster box set without any question from HTF members about the Hitchcock box set before they cutoff any further questions. However, it still gave us as a group an impression that they...
Unfortunately, I took it that way.
As to the second bolded part of your post, it's what this forum is all about, but not everyone is going to agree on what's acceptable to them for reasons I already stated in earlier posts.
I spent a great deal of my time at last week's HTF Meet in...
RAH,
You know, I have the highest respect for you and greatly admire the work you have accomplished in your field. For you to take time out of your busy schedule to converse with the likes of me is really awesome and I want to thank you for doing so and being patient with me and my...
I really hope you don't feel that way. Judging by the responses you get from most members regarding your disc critiques, I can't say you failed to educate others. Even those that don't fully agree with your educated opinion, appreciate and take great value from your stated comments...
What has that got to do with this release? I haven't seen this disc yet so I might even agree with RAH and Kevin. Anyhow, I'll shut up on this box set until I actually do watch these discs in their entirety. Sorry, I missed meeting you the other day in LA.

I hate to say this, but it's true in my opinion. Most people will probably be happy with these two titles in question and most likely don't even know some are questioning the quality of them. People are going to judge the watcheability of these discs with their own eyes and on their HT...
Excellent point. If it was up to the people in direct control of the elements, every title would be done right as these people love film and generally respect film history. However, in the corporate setting, you have those pushing down their budget goals who have little regard to film and its...
By the way, based on my conversation with Paramount yesterday, they said something about Technicolor or maybe some other company not working on preparing elements for BD in the near future. I thought they said Technicolor, but I might be mistaken.

Based on HTF's visit at MPI this past Tuesday, I along with many other members were very impressed with MPI. We met with the colorist that's working on Cabaret, East of Eden and Rebel Without a Cause. The scenes she shown us looked beautiful and very film-like.
