Coincidentally I just saw Oldboy last night as well. I can see why it won the 2nd Prize at Canne Film Festival this year. (1st Prize went to Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11.) Unlike bulk of recent Korean movies which have Hollywood blockbuster feel, Oldboy had an European feel. Definitely two thumbs up...

Henry, Henry, Henry. You should read through the entire thread before making a hasty assumption based on recent batch of posts. It makes us hard to take you seriously.

Shaw Brothers films? Are you referring to those Saturday Afternoon Kung Fu Action Theater movies? If you are then those were great: Kid with the Golden Arm, Five Deadly Venoms (my favorite) and Gordon Liu movies. Two thumbs up! Edit: Repeat to self - Five, not Seven, Deadly Venoms :b

Just watched "Jakarta." The beginning felt like a grimmer version of John Woo's "Once A Thief" from late 80's, early 90's, except the people weren't as pretty and the setting wasn't as high society. Made me curious as to why a movie from 2000 felt like a movie from a decade ago. After half an...

You don't have to intentionally look for the rip offs. How can you not notice the obvious copying? And I am not even referring to the derivative storyline. The main character dresses almost exactly like Neo from Matrix. The aliens look like clones of aliens from Independence Day. The...

Here is a riddle for you guys. What do you get when you mix in time travel and apocalyptic future from Terminator; aliens and their gigantic spaceship from Independence Day; invincible hitman and his old, wise handler from the Professional; slick black leather long coat, cool shades and...

Tampopo is one of my favorite movies. Makes me hungry every time I watch it. Check out Juzo Itami's other movies: Taxing Woman was great; Taxing Woman's Return was so-so; The Funeral was pretty good. I think Tampopo and Taxing Woman were his best work (of his movies that I have seen so far).

Doesn't seem like Ahn Joong-Geun (that appears to be the "official" spelling) and Philip Ahn was related. Philip Ahn's father was another famous Korean independence "fighter," Ahn Chang-Ho. Ahn Joong-Geun appeared to be of militant faction of Korean independence movement. He actually battled...

Standard Chajangmyun uses pork or so I've been told. Anyway there were couple of holes in 2009 Lost Memories. First is how did the girl main character get sucked into the future? I thought the time portal was one-way deal, at least that's what the JBI commissioner told Saigo, Sakamoto's...

Just saw 2009 Lost Memories. Despite obvious holes in the story, I thought it was technically and cinematically superb. I saw a bit of John Woo, Wong Kai-War and Ridley Scott influences. It amazes me what Korean film makers can produce on a fraction of Hollywood budget. I read somewhere that...

I have watched some anime while in college. I seem to grasp the humor of anime better than the movies. I thought Urusei Yatsura and Tenchi Muyo were hilarious. The humor was different but I still found it as humor. Asian cinema comedies, on the other hand, I have trouble understanding. It...

I did a little research (which means I asked those smarter and more knowledgable than I am :D ) and there is a word "Musoori" which was exclusively used to denote servant girls serving in the royal palace. Apparently they were the lowest on the totem pole and were at the mercy and whim of those...

I am very sure that Musa means Warrior. It's two ideogram word that consists of Martial (Mu) and Gentleman (Sa). As you know Korean and Japanese still heavily use Chinese ideograms in their written languages. In Confucianism, people who engage in physical or manual endeavors were held in...

I am exact opposite. :) I loved Musa but I just couldn't get into the Storm Riders. It was too cartoony, not motion picture-ish enough. Perhaps it was too faithful to the source material. Same with Bichunmoo. I enjoy wire-fu up to a certain point but some are just too much. FYI, the word Musa is...
