Sorry but a recent film festival proves nothing as to how they were shown theatrically. There were more than likely cropped prints made to be used at old theaters and drive-ins that were not yet capable of widescreen. That could also be where our TV Prints and these DVD's are coming from.

I honestly don't see a big difference. You are either Pro-OAR or not. These films whether Open Matte or Zoomed in Open Matte are not OAR. I guess there is an in-between stage that I wasn't aware of. That if the movie is not a big budget classic then it doesn't deserve respect and if we saw it on...

I don't consider any of Universal's DVD-18's shoddily done either but thats also all relative and another story and I wouldn't have cared if this set was DVD-18's or not as long as the transfers were done right but they weren't. Why shouldn't people complain about DVD-18's if they can't get them...

Hey one positive about all this bickering is that a thread about old sci-fi monster movies is nearly 8 pages long now :D

Thats True Joe. For many years I kept my VHS for old movies, Sci-fi, monsters, Abbott and Costello, etc. that weren't on Laserdisc but I have not had a VCR in my house for 5 years now and have been getting rid of my VHS little by little since then. Maybe I should have said "highly inferior to"...

Eric Again Why is it so hard to follow everything in this thread that has been repeated so that we don't have to keep repeating it. Yes there were studios that filmed in 1.37 and then matted to widescreen but as already shown with articles previously in this thread Universal did not do this...

We've been talking about zoomed in mattes on the past 2 pages. There is evidence supporting that these were filmed 1.85 there is no evidence only speculation that these could have been filmed with both 1.33 and 1.85 in mind. I refuse to believe in pure speculation when there is evidence...

Formats cannot be compared equally as far as releases go. I previously had VHS and Laserdisc. Laserdisc was superior to VHS in everyway and was designed to be a replacement for it but because of poor marketing and Pioneer being the only manufacturer for far too long it remained a niche or cult...

1st off zooming them makes them look grainier than they already are. I owned these films on VHS except for shrinking man so thats how I now they are the same masters with the same defects. As far as waiting forever it took 9 years for DVD is that what you call forever? It will probably be less...

    The Classic Sci-FI Ultimate Collection

Alot here are missing the point that we got a set of old VHS masters that really look it. All the films are grainy and have poor contrast at times. I'm sorry I bought my set now and will probably return it. HD is coming out now so new proper versions of these films may not be as far away as some...

All 5 films should have been 1:78.1. None of these films were composed for academy ratio. The only film being presented correctly is Incredible Shrinking Man. The other films are not being presented in OAR and its too bad that this forum used to be pro-OAR but times have changed.

Thanks for catching that Peter. Old age is starting to creep up. And yes I know It came from Outer Space has been previously released but many movies previously released have later been repackaged as part of a set and at a lower price.

There could definately be a 2nd volume coming that could include: 1.) The Land Unknown 2.) The Deadly Mantis 3.) Leech Woman 4.) Cult of the Cobra 5.) It Came from Outer Space These titles are based on what Universal has released under the Sci-Fi label on VHS/Laserdisc in the past.

Great news and great price. I'll buy them regardless of format since I've never had an issue with a DVD-18 only a few DVD-9's. Maybe these will be two DVD-14's since its only 5 movies.
