I wasn't really trying to make any point, but just thought it was worth mentioning. The omission is an unfortunate thing, but it's not like it was deliberate. And I have to say the scene is still VERY emotional without the moan. I will quietly wish for a fix, understanding it's not likely...
Scott, I agree it's a major bummer, but it's not likely the error is going to get corrected. I wouldn't pass up the DVD just because of this. For whatever it's worth, I checked and the "groan" does not appear in the screenplay.
...and the whole thing just becomes more convoluted. :frowning:
If this is a "mistake" that dates back to 1982, it's rather amazing to me that nobody caught it.
Nice review, Scott :emoji_thumbsup:

Now back to the missing "groan" for a moment...has anyone checked the 2 disc set to see if it is missing, particularly on the DTS track on the 1982 version, which doesn't exist on the Gift Set disc?
John, please don't take offense. I'm not saying there is anything wrong with your mind. But "false memories" are a common thing, especially with movies. It happens to all of us from time to time. And I'm not saying that you are definitely wrong, I'm just saying that a memory is not proof.
I checked the disc and I don't quite know what you think is missing.
E.T. is not even on screen at the 86 minute mark. The very next scene that he's in is the one where he dies
.
Scott, I think that is an excellent observation. I completely agree with you. Watched the original version again last night. As the old saying goes, If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
After promising myself all week that I would just get the 2-disc edition, I walked into the store today, took one look at the Gift Set and knew I had to have it. I'm impressed by the way the discs themselves are housed in the set. Much better than the 2 disc set and I can easily remove the...
I sincerely doubt the Gift Set is going to have a different transfer. There would be no logic to doing two different transfers of the same film.
And I forgot to say earlier...
David, thank you ever so much for bringing this discovery to our attention. :)
