    Could he have not actually seen it break up? Others who said it did break up might have had a better view... it was such a traumatic thing happening... there were probably questions about there being enough lifeboats, etc going on.

    ^^ great point. They really didn't know exactly where it was on the bottom at the time.. just guesses I believe. So there was some amazing mystery about it. Makes me think of the ghost ship concept. There are supposed to be quite a few out there still. Google that, kind of weird.
