I've seen original 35mm prints of Citizen Kane - both nitrate and safety - from the 1941 release and later reissues. The DVD doesn't look like any of them, a lot of the "life" of the image has been stripped away by the noise reduction. The DVD looks very nice, but it doesn't look like the film...

Here's one (a reasonable speculation): They just found a *better* source print for the DVD and are now in the process of preparing it for the LDI treatment. This means that we'll get a better DVD release at the expense of missing the desired 2003 release date.
