the problem I've always had with SII is that it has always been preposterous, even within it own universe.
So many of the plot points are groan inducing, of which the walk back fortress (and by implication, the fact that Lois and Clark walked out of fortress and found a car with relative ease...
One thing I was very surprised to see is when we cut to Perrys office just before the villans breech the newsroom.
In Lesters cut, even though Margot looks horrible, Lois's lines and line readings are much more emotionally valid given the circumstances. There looks to be a true sense of...
Donner (along with Mankiewicz) get a lot of credit for ushering live-action superhero material into the modern age.
But the idea that everything had to return to the same stasis by the end of II. no matter what happened in the middle of the story (i.e. the clark/lois/superman dynamic) is...
yup
yup
yup
me too.
I always liked Kidder, and the new begining is a good example why. In addition to the presence of Brando, I loved seeing Lois in Supermans shirt, and I loved the way Jor-el steals an implicating glance at her during the depowering .
In fact, the whole depowering...
Superman II was successful. But at the time I wouldn't percieve it as a 'smash'- and I was a huge Superman fan when it was released, I was pulling for it to be a smash (even though I really was disappointed in it-go figure the fanboy mentality). Movies that I would consider 'smashes' that summer...
several things I was still disappointed to see in the "Donner" version
-The taxi with the crushed front end, and the close up of the cabbie as he uses the wipers to clear the debris from his car enthusiastically saying "this is gonna be good!"
I have always hate, hate, hated this cutaway...
genius is just undetected plagarism.
Larry Niven is the first guy I know of to publicly consider the implications of super sperm.
Google "man of steel, woman of kleenex"
actually I wasn't being entirely honest. I expect the general concensus to be much more hostile.
Reactions, like your review, I expect to be from the long time fans who known about this issue for years and have had a decent understanding of the limitations involved with this project from the...
enjoyed the review Andy. It's also dead on with what I've been anticipating will be the general concensus (though we'll just have to see about that in a few weeks).
Robert, one of the reviewers over on Dharmesh's board, who was at the DG showing commented that it was still in this cut. I think I saw it on the second page of the main review thread.
The more I think about it, the more I wish they hadn't resolved this 'cut' the way they did. That may have...
That's ok Mike, you're not alone. There are a few of us that had the exact same reactions.
We're getting some coffee later at Perkins if you want to join us- we'll all be in the booth in the far corner.
with a project like this , though, I would imagine the approach would need to be quite different
1) inventory all the elements and see what whole sequences are missing- along with what elements within sequences are missing (reaction shots and other general pick-ups)
2) after a rough...
continutity from shot to shot is a problem. You can easily see it in the small snippets of footage they have already released
-the villans chase superman in the air around the city - cut to a c/u of Superman as he turns around (the sky is a twilight blue in the background)
cut to a long...
fwiw, I expect over on the HD DVD side (and Bd too, I guess) that SR will get 5 stars across the board for a/v. It will probably be looked at as a reference standard for many years- if not, something will be terribly wrong.
On the other hand, I expect the two Donner titles to get decidedly...
I don't think so Jon- at least not in the case of the first film. It looks like it will mirror the 2001 release as far as version/audio and extras are concerned.
The Donner cut release should be identical across all formats
Adam I said this several months ago (before we saw any footage from the new cut)- that people are going to be expecting a polished, theatrically releaseable film- and this just won't, and can't be, the case.
Expect this to be VERY rough around the edges. Smooth inter scene continuity is going...
Since even fans of the first two films generally hold the second two in much lower esteem, I wouldn't expect Warner to fit those two into the HD production pipeline anytime soon. Just like the first time around when they lavished all the attention and resources towards the first film, I think...
This is my main concern at this point.
Even months after Robert Harris said that Warner was aware of the 1080i issue, had pulled all the rest on the schedule for new transfers, and that only a 'few more' may slip out, we are seeing that discs hit the street that still have this problem in...
no. The 2001 transfers were from cleaned up/refined elements.
I would have liked new 1080p transfers for the HD DVDs but its possible we won't even get those.
I like that alot. For me, it doesn't impact the originals pacing at all at that juncture, and the chance to finally see that material presented properly (i missed the original TV airing) was a real treat.
The other additions I liked were to the sequences on Krypton, and the one extension after...
the four disc set is scheduled to have
-the original double sided disc split across two discs
disc 3 will be the original theatrical cut (but with the 2001 audio mix...tho it will be ...get this...anamorphic widescreen!) the Theatrical version will also have a commentary with Salkind and...
I agree. Not great, not bad- certainly the best of a lousy batch.
For all I know, none of the HD discs have been 'officially' announced yet, but the Donner cut was mentioned as coming out on HD along with at least the first and second film way back in February at the big studio/press event...
yup that is custom art, and yes, it's supposed to be coming out on HD DVD as well as sd dvd (yes, and Bd too).
I'm not sure if there will be a set though, or which version of the first film they will issue or if they issue both in one set or two seperately.
but these are coming to HD and...
haven't seen the jacket art to the Donner version yet, but I'm assuming it will look just as lame as the others. I'll almost certainly be making my own custom jackets for the HD DVDs and I'll try to find someone to host them if anyone else is interested in them. You've seen the mock-up for the...
