Personally, as much as I would like to get a Blu-ray player, I don't foresee that happening very soon. The economy, for one thing, and also just because it would entail getting all new equipment: a 1080p projector, new receiver, etc. to take advantage of the improved video and audio qualities to...

Gary, any plans for the rest of the new Hitchcock set? I'd love to see how The Lodger looks.

Surprisingly, the new MGM Rebecca transfer looks a tad sharper than the Criterion. I'll be picking up the MGM Hitch box, despite having all the Criterion version from it.

I just find it strange that the colors look nothing alike, not even close. Or don't you agree?

It's amazing how wrong the color of the "Restoration" looks (both the SD and especially the Blu). I was waiting for this to make my decision whether to upgrade but I see now I was wise to wait. I can't believe Beaver is grading the image quality towards Blu-ray.

Gary, in your review you say that there's "no discernable upgrade that [you] can determine," but looking at the screenshots you can tell that the new edition is (albeit slightly) brighter and not as saturated (look at the last set of shots). There's also a tiny bit more sharpness (look at the...

Was really looking forward to the Paradjanov set, but looks like I'll have to pass. Maybe pick up the restored discs separately.

Gary, any chance you'll compare Season One of I Love Lucy, between the individual release and the supposedly remastered version in The Complete Series?

Kino is rather significantly sharper than the MoC.

No problem, Gary. Glad to've helped. Mine's on order from DeepDiscount, can't wait to get it!

Gary, in your Berlin Alexanderplatz comparison you talk about the extras and how the two editions vary.

The Shining is a great comparison! The 2-disc edition looks great. I'll certainly be picking up the new box.

Gary, why do you still recommend the R2 of The Graduate over the new R1? It looks better to me, with more information and better color timing.

The HD looks really blown out there. Too much brightness and contrast. Edit: Ah I see it's not an actual screenshot. Sorry.

Wow, ESP or something huh :) Yeah the new transer is great, no contest. Most people don't like this Hitch film at all, which is sad. But the restored Hitchcockian canon is growing, and that is not sad!

Criterion's Spirit of the Beehive is definitely superior in every way. The transfer from Optimum is washed out and obviously not as sharp.

I agree with Patrick on this. I too have a hard time believing the old DVD's colors represent how the film should look. I have no way of knowing but I will assume the main title's lettering was not intended to be that muddy orange color, but pure red. Which it is on the new DVD. And the transfer...

AV Channel and Eureka (while similar) have different color schemes - at least in the given screenshot. AV Channel's desaturated and almost gray, while Eureka's got much more color (see the red in the eyes, for instance), and is brownish in tone. There has to be a reason as to why Criterion's...

Gary, I just preordered The Towering Inferno solely based on your comparison (using the Beaver link). Hell, it's just thirteen bucks, and it seems like quite a package, and a stunning restoration.

All I'm saying, in that penultimate screenshot (and I'm using it as an example; I feel the same about others, but this is the most drastic example, to me), there are many instances where Criterion's color is better. It's a bright shot. Obviously non-stylized. Hence, the skin color should be...

Can't wait to get my hands on The Passenger! But, Gary, I once again must disagree with you. This time about the colors of Kwaidan. To me the colors of Criterion seem to be the truer colors (this is apparent in every screenshot but most noticable in the penultimate shot), as well as the...
