The Barry score is one of the best composed. It would have certainly benefitted the film if it was in stereo. From what I recall The Lion in Winter was always planned as a Roadshow special event film so it is anyone's guess as to why it was not released in stereo. My guess...keeping costs down...
Very excited about this release. I saw Lion in Winter during its NYC
Roadshow run and it was in full bodied mono. The complaint about the 4k
restoration was the sound was tinny. Hope Kino can correct this as the John Barry score is a classic.
Also, read on another site that Valmont has been...
Agree on the cover of the gun pointing at Jane Fonda"s head. Extremely poor taste and should be changed as there were numerous alternate posters available for this film.
Art is in the eye of the beholder. Peck looks 20 years too old on the left poster and the modern one well...it's an interesting take. In any case it's the transfer that matters most and I'm aniticipating a good one based upon the last DVD version.
Thank you for going down memory lane with me. Though the article speaks for itself it really doesn't say that the Astor theatre had stereo sound prior to this redo. Or not. I am quite sure that the James Dean vehicle East of Eden being a stereo movie played in stereo at the Astor. I've seen...

Interesting discussion years ago on Film Score Monthly in which I participated. I saw Nicholas and Alexandra in Roadshow in mono sound. Some others stated it was in stereo.
Bob...I'm confused by your statement about by 1958...
The Vikings was in stereo. That said if it wasn't for the estates of many composers we would not have
the music scores of many great films. The Big Country would have been lost. The Vikings is lost. Haswaii would be lost. Spartacus only in ooor mono. Just so many scores. We are indebted to...
Re: The Big Country
One could surmise that based upon the history of the original soundtrack releases. That said based upon what I've read over the years I believe that the film was originally in stereo. The ScreenArchives release of the Jerome Moross score quotes a member of the Moross...
The original soundtrack was released on LP in fake stereo as well as better then sounding mono. The only stereo recording of the music is from a re recording done by Silva records. All original recording releases have been in mono.
I watched the blu ray of The Big Country last night. First off the disc is distributed by Fox. Has absolutely no 'extras'. In a few scenes it appears both Gregory Peck and Charlton Heston put on a few pounds. Which is highly unlikely on a William Wyler film. This blu ray was the result of...
Yes.. When the film opened in New York. It is described in one of the soundtrack releases. Someone also had posted a photo of the cans of the film marked in stereo as well as persistent resports of a collector having the stereo tracks. Unfortunately I have never seen the film in stereo.
When the disc was released I recall a number of comments concerning the poor sound. Is this the case? The John Barry score is a wonderful listen all by itself. How does it fare on the Bluray?
Who is to blame on the Paramount lack of product? WB? Paramount? Both? Does anyone know what is going on with this studio and their classic films? Are we going to see HUD released? Or the restored A Place in the Sun. I assume that KL Classics is in the hunt to release these worthy films.
It gives us all something to look forward to..
Kidding aside I will assume that KL Classics as well as other labels have reached out to WB without much success. Though there has been a limited number of titles released by the CriterionCollection this of course is a drop in the bucket. Thus...
Wow. Didn't know this. I guess nothing is a 'sure' thing until it is released. Me, I'm waiting for VALMONT but I don't recall seeing a release date. I was also wondering if Kino was able to piggyback on the Pathe restoration or not. Other titles I'm hoping to see one day Duel in the Sun and...
Any chance that Fox will revisit Demetrius and the Gladiators and proceed with a 4K scan? TT has stated they will not revisit films that they previously released.
I've read that the 'problems' with Fox Technicolor films of this era was simply a lack of good elements since they were thrown away in the 70's! One that comes to mind is Leave Her To Heaven which needed tremendous efforts to get it as good as it is on Bluray. Imagine if they had the original...
Does anyone know why on earth was this movie not filmed in COLOR? Too expensive? What a mistake!
Good score by Alfred Newman. Was available from FilmScoreMonthly. May still be available.
