Re: The Hindenburg at the UA 150
The showing of The Hindenburg at this theater was quite spectacular. The sound came from all over theater with an emphasis on over head sounds. This was 45 years or more prior to the advent of Dolby Atmos.
I did see Patton on the D150 screen in the UA 150'in Woodbury. The showing covered the complete screen. What was unusual about it was that a week earlier it played at the UA Syosset (which was down the block) in 70mm. Needless to say the presentation at the UA 150 was more impressive. As I...
My favorite theater on Long Island was the UA 150 theater in Woodbury NY. Saw many 70mm presentations where the screen was fully opened. Like many of our favorites theaters it's long gone.
Re The Bible
The screen utilized for showing at Loew's State for The Bible was quite large and was much larger than the normal 70mm presentations.
Re: The Sand Pebbles
I believe TSP was cut in January 1967 within a month of the premier. I saw the uncut version in December 1966. My parents...
Re: The Bible
Both statements were used in the ads. I have the same one from above as well as full page ads showing 'Filmed and Presented in D-150.'
I also have ads showing 'Produced in 70mm'. I just have the ads from the NYT without dates but I will assume the ads with the D-150...
There might have been an ad to two for films being shown on the D150 screen at the Rivoli. Of course there were two Roadshow films that played in NYC theaters that were indeed filmed in D;150. They were The Bible at the Loews State and Patton at the Criterion. The Criterion was shown on their...
Too bad. I guess Wayne's The Alamo will never be seen as originally released. Missed out on seeing The Alamo at The Rivoli. The sound and picture must have been something to hear and see.
Besides possibly the missing ToddAO credit in the titles what would be the difference between that old laser transfer and the actual original Roadshow version.
Thanks
At one point in time I had believed that The Alamo would be released on blu ray similar to,the Twilight Time blu ray of Hawaii. The short cut in HD and the longer original version in SD.
Thus far it has not materialized.
Perhaps the best that fans of The Alamo can hope for is the short...
What other differences are there between the Roadshow version and the long version as shown on TCM.
I've recorded the short version from MGMHD and the long version from TCM. There is no comparison. Sound and video on the short is quite good. I believe and this is just a guess ...that...
Tiomkin's The Alamo is a really good score and my favorite from his long and storied career.
That said I believe that Alex North's Spartacus should have been the pick of a really good year in film music.
Exodus...winner
The Magnificent Seven
Pyscho...not even nominated
Agree on Fall of the...
I too recorded the TCM showing of the longer or laserdisc version of The Alamo. It was nothing like the Spring HD showing of the short version. Colors were muddy, muted or non existent. It reminded me of a theatrical showing of Spartacus I saw a few years ago prior to the recent restoration...
In 1960 as a kid I certainly didn't know the facts about Davy C and the Alamo. What I did know was from Fess Parker in the Disney TV version of a few years earlier.
First film I saw projected in ToddAO. First film I noticed the music of Dimitri Tiomkin who quickly became a favorite back...
HAWAII ....2 versions. Twilight Time
IT'S A MAD WORLD......2 versions. Criterion Collection
Prediction
THE ALAMO.....2 versions. Criterion Collection as TT stated that they do not have The Alamo
Please describe the Lawrence prologue. Was it shown prior to the titles? I saw Lawrence in it's first month at The Criterion Theater NYC and don't recall the prologue.
Last time I saw The Alamo it was on laserdisc. This MGMHD showing was much better than that....It looked pretty good on my set. The sound was stereo and it did contain directional dialogue. That said it's really a shame that you weren't allowed to save this film.
On the restored Spartacus...
Same here. Looks like HD to my eyes. Color are rich and deep on my 60 inch Kuro plasma. Diectional dialog has been retained unlike the recent Spartacus restoration.
Everyone is entitled to an opinion. I for one believe that both John Wayne and Charlton Heston were fine actors and a few of their performances could be considered among the finest ever to appear in film. Why do you doubt that John Wayne was an international icon?
I recorded EXODUS and viewed the first 20 minutes or so. Yes, it's in the 2.35 ratio. The sound while not bad is certainly not derived from the 6 channel stereo tracks. Perhaps 2 channel stereo. The biggest surprise was the change of color of the Saul Bass main title design. While not a...
Agree that the two films are of different eras and styles. But one thing that is common to all good films from 1939's Gone With The Wind to 1962's Lawrence of Arabia and beyond is that they be entertaining. Some may think that John Wayne's pet project was a failure. Not me(certainly not in...
