I don't see why it's hypocritical. Nearly all his films on DVD have lengthy and extensive documentaries. The docs for Close Encounters, Jaws, and E.T. are all over 90 minutes, which is feature-length. For all we know, he has the commentary charisma of Tim Burton.
He always opts for excellent documentaries instead. The lengthy docs on the Jaws, Close Encounters, Indiana Jones, and E.T. (gift set) DVDs are just as valuable as yack tracks.
