HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

Regarding the extras, I've been meaning to comment on the much discussed original effects comparison to the new CGI effects feature of this set when first announced. Perhaps my interpretation of this feature was wrong, or others thought the same thing. There was no actual original footage...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

I just saw Space Seed on the new HD set with the Starfleet Access turned on. This episode sure had that function working a lot! They had a lot of commentary from many people you'd expect, the Okudas, Dave Rossi(who is so incredibly enthusiastic and quite a hardcore fan and it shows!), DC...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

I have another observation I thought I'd pass on regarding Arena which I just saw. Early on in the remastering program, as many here know, the CGI Enterprise was looking pretty flat. It had no life, the material used on the hull was not reflecting any light or I should say, it had no shine...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

Lou, I sure do own it on SD, double dipped and got it on LD too! I am not referring to any big cuts, I am referring to very imperceptable cuts. For example, at the end of Mudd's Women, Mudd is trying to get Kirk to leave Mudd on the planet, and Kirk kids he could be the character...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

There seems to appear to be very little to no reports of glitches with this set! That's great so far. I did experience one minor glitch. At the 30 minute mark of The Squire of Gothos, at the commerical break, when the next act resumes, the picture froze on my A35, no sound. But I could see...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

Yes, Emily Banks wasn't bad. The Yeoman function was dropped soon after this episode. Another aspect of Galileo Seven I forgot to mention was the Spock character was given some definition and used to highlight the better aspects of humanity verses logic to save their skins.

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

Galileo Seven, Shore Leave and Conscience of the King are all favorites of mine! Everyone has an opinion! I think Conscience of the King also has one of the best musical scores. Not the jazzy music being played at Layton's party, but the entire score cut for this episode. I just saw Shore...

Same here, Conscience of the King played fine, no synch issues.

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

The episodes are full and unedited. But technically, they are edited in the sense that the new CGI are altering only the shots where the original live action was cross faded from live action to CGI, a second or so is lost so CGI overlaps live action without revealing original cross dissolve...

Is the lip synch issue throughout the whole episode? I've read about members who have lip synch issues for years going back to the early SD DVD's and I have never encountered it before. I have an A35, so I'll check for it!

Nice screen caps Phil! I'll have to try your camera settings, I've been wanting to do this too for fun.

Paul, I think it's your firmware. I've used the Starfleet Access feature a few times and it did not act like what you describe. My Toshiba player is a brandnew new A35, but it has old firmware too!

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

I think John is entitled to his opinion and he shouldn't have to argue his point. That said, I was thinking of another line that might be fitting here, Worf to Locutus: "I like my species the way it is!"

I saw the Blackburn featurette on the SD side of disc 7, IIRC the disc number. There is an HD version apparently as I just checked the liner notes. It's the HD side of disc 10. I'll have to check that verison out!

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

In reference to Paul's comment that the original was shot and meant for TV broadcast in SD, this is true and I did watch it at the time on a 20" black and white tube TV set! Remember those? And I mean tube, before solid state, not the CRT. That set was in a real wooden enclosure as they did in...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

Back to the HD-DVD's. I just watched Mudd's Women. Not my fav, but a nice story about steroid use and believing in yourself. This Remastered version has not aired yet, so it was a pleasure to see it. I think this was a fun one, they did a cool series of shots of Mudd's cargo ship evading and...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

This is certainly the Kobayashi Maru of Star Trek DVDs. It's a No-Win scenario on many levels! Can't win on the SD-HD combos and can't win if they tried to update the effects!:) Of course there is no one right answer. I think the coolest aspect of this experiment is that Paramount has...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

The documentary in the box set describes the remastering process and covers the music issue. No reason other then wanting to spruce up the series to modern standards. The idea was to go to the film negatives and clean-up and restore the film elements. They then thought they could recreate, using...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

I was going to post a reply to John, but I already gave my opinion on the other Star Trek thread to John's identical comments posted. Suffice it to say, the show is ready to entertain another few generations with a beautiful restoration of the film elements, irrespective of the new CGI. John...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

Mike- When the changes were first announced, I was pretty skeptical and amazed that they were putting the effort to do this. At the same time, some CGI samples of the Enterprises fully rendered were also released at the time. Speaking for myself, initially, I didn't thiink it was a very...

Lou, that's a shame about the shipping. What a pain. Thanks for the background info Douglas. These new HD transfer really do show case the lighting work of Finnerman. Never before has it been showcased in what I would say as accurately. The deeper shadow and light looks great on these discs...

Congrates Lou! Sorry to hear your set wasn't perfect. Was it damaged from shipping or the way it was assembled at the factory? Now the fun begins! Dave, my guess is he had a hairpiece way before Trek. Just from looking at his appearances on Twilight Zone and Outer Limits.

Thanks Lou, you're welcome. My pleasure! I also saw Where No Man Has Gone before. I didn't notice that glitch Paul. So I must now review it and see if I can see it! One thing I noticed about Where No Man, as it's the pilot, the color of Nimoy's skin is a tad greener. Shatner's hair is a...

I'm finally going to have some time the next day to play with these discs! I did see Balance of Terror last night and sampled a bit of Shore Leave and Charlie X earlier. Here's a quicky review of 2 episodes for Lou: As for the sound, I have a different experience. The audio from the...

I couldn't resist. I played Charlie X, from the first disc. I have an HD-A35 and I have not updated the firmware yet. I'm on 1.0/1.1. The disc played fine, both the HD side and SD side. Man, oh man, never looked so good before. The detail of the fabrics on the costumes and the fine lines and...

I just got back from two Best Buys, and found a copy at the second one. The price was a bit higher then the website had it at yesterday, and now the website doesn't show it at all! Probably why the first BB didn't know what I was talking about. Well, after all that time from the summer where...

HTF HD-DVD Review: Star Trek: The Original Series Season One

I just read a short review of this set on a Trek site. I often wonder if he comes here.... He's also chimed in on the grain issue. What is interesting is that the reviewer could see grain in the live action, but also felt they added grain to the new CGI effects in an attempted to match the...
