    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Believe me, there are still plenty of absolutely *awful* quality discs around. You see 'em everywhere! Now, I hope and believe that studios like Warner have decent quality control and that they aren't bulk-buying from the cheapest source (they'd be completely mad to, as it would simply generate...

Usually: If you get a problem like this, and it's on one disc but not a replacement, it's a manufacture problem (or in this case, maybe a burn problem) If it appears on a replacement as well, and espescially if it's consistent (ie same problem, same place) then it probably indicates a problem...

I'd echo that advice. It's certainly possible for some players to be particularly sensitive - it's even possible that there are minor problems with the encoding but which do not cause actual glitches on most players. My old Pioneer player was prone to that, and would give the "screen of pixels"...

I didn;t imply that you did want multiple discounts. Just that it's a fairly standard policy for most stores in that they don't allow discounts to be used additively. It's WB Store's fault, not yours, for sending out a load of coupons and then deciding to run a sale alongside them. They should...

Presumably it's the old chestnut that most stores disallow the combination of multiple discounts

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

IMHO Warner making such a specific guarantee is a response to customer concerns about DVDR's. Whether you consider this misplaced or not, some customs are worried about DVDR's. Probably driven by the known failures of cheap media, which leads some to worry that all media are equally prone to...

And because it's universally available, it will come down a lot due to price competition. Archive titles retain that "exclusivity" being available only from WB themselves or a select few online stores so hardly ever do, outside of WB's own regular sales...which of course are useless to me...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

I wasn't aware that any of us were "insisting" anything. Only pointing out that not all DVDR media are the same, and that it can take very rigorous and stringent quality control routines to stop cheap and nasty media getting into the production lines, because "quality brand name" producers can...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Actually, that's not true. The problem of DVDR's that are manufactured with inferior grade dyes is well known. I'd like to think that Warner have rigorous procedures in place to ensure that the Archive releases aren't put out on such inferior media, but instead use top-quality ones. Cheap...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

The launch date has nothing to do with it - things like restoration are all down to budget, how much the studio is willing to spend on a release. Warner found from the start that people would buy these titles at a premium price without there being any extras or restoration (as such). Therefore...

Which is of course pretty meaningless in the arger scheme of things. I hope very much that Warner have ensured they have used top quality DVDR's for their releases - ie, they are using discs preferably made in Japan with something like Tairo Yuden dyes. And not something nasty churned out in...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Putting 1300 movies into release isn't appreciating the customer - it appreciates their dollars. The poster above makes a very valid point by highlighting the rather disturbing trend for Warner to shove almost every new release into the Archive - aside from brand new blockbusters, it seems...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Well, problems with pressed discs are extremely rare, and are nearly always down to a problem when they're manufactured. The Universal discs, for example, all emanate from one factory in Mexico, and it seems their quality control was lax. But generally speaking, pressed discs are established as...

No, it's more like that old saying about democracy: it sucks, but it's better than the alternatives. Same with WA and the rest of the MOD. I might buy because there's no alternative, but I can't say it's a pleasant experience. The only good thing about the MOD is that they get the movies out...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Ooh, nasty. Given that DVDR's can and do fail spontaneously, it's really bad they're stiffing everyone with the standard 30 day period. Backing up these things isn't legal (because you have to defeat an encryption/copy protect system to do so) but it seems there is little choice if Warner...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Importing this sort of stuff is perfectly legal, so long as it's not for commercial purposes - i.e. not for resale in the country it's being imported into. Most studios don;t sell direct outside of the domestic market, but loads of stores do. I think it's more to do with the added logistics of...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

Yes, I'm really looking forward to the future of DVD being movies at double or triple the price whilst being unrestored and having no extra features whatever. Of course everyone is copying the MOD model. What business would miss the opportunity to produce a product more cheaply and...

Blimey, the amount of storage boggles the mind, if you're going to keep everything in HD. Even with drives continusouly getting bigger and cheaper, thats still one hell of a fileserver /img/vbsmilies/htf/smiley_jawdrop.gif

Oh yes, I agree with you entirely. My thoughts about "protestors" were voiced completely from the Warner perspective. I am sure it is how they view it; that whilst "a few" customers may refuse, many more will simply grumble but still open their wallets, because of their over-riding desire to...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

The simple answer is: because they can be. Essentially, Warner are free to charge whatever they think the market will stand. Warner are the sole source, and charge accordingly. They know that the sort of people who buy these things may well grumble about the cost, but want the movies badly...

"I'm just happy to have the films" Which is exactly what the bean counters were hoping for, when they first decided on the outrageous overprice. Still, it doesn't matter, because people overseas still can't buy them. So, whilst I'd love to have From Hell It Came, it looks like I never will.

That'll be "nuts" as in "jumping up and down in frustration that being outsid eof the US I still can't buy these, despite a promise to the contrary" I'm thankful that for the moment I'm not interested in any of the Archive stuff. It'd be like constantly dangling candy in front of a baby and...

Nuts to you to! You got lucky. Sometimes processing centres miss stuff that should get charged . It happens all the time. It's quite possible that next time around you'll get a nice fat bill from UPS ... Secondly, what's the situation regarding import duties and taxes for people in Canada...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

I'd echo the sentiment that the program is a good idea, but poorly executed. The basic premise is good: to enable films that would not be released into the mass market because they wouldn't sell enough units to be profitable (or, at least, not profitable enough for a big studio like Warner...

Well that's tantamount to a Warner rep admitting that their international shipping fees are "grossly extortionate" - and I'm being kind here! Mind you, if you think you're badly off in Canada, spare a though for us here in the UK. As soon as any package goes over £18 sterling, which thanks to...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

The problem is that - like most big outfits - Warner "don't do small". When they do a DVD release, they do it the way they've always done it, which means, using hundreds of staff in huge departments. They just aren't set up and can't get their heads around doing it the way a small label does...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

It is, ostensibly, for reasons of rights. But it is also to do with market protection. The studios wish to control exactly what the customer can buy, and when, and most importantly, at what price. It is well known that DVD's in Europe, and even more so in Japan, are more expensive. For no...

    Warner Archive Discussion Thread (FEEDBACK)

I think you will find that one or two stores, like MoviesUnlimited and CreepClassics, were offering "exclusive" discs by simply buying and reselling them. In the case of some of the Best Buy only ones, which were initially in-store-only, this meant the proprietors were quite literally visiting...

Download services are almost always restricted. They usually do it by insisting that the billing address of the payment card is a domestic resident. Amazon Downloads are restricted in that way. And that's even harder to work around. It's still possible, but involves a high degree of trust
