Here's a pretty good interview with Mann, posted yesterday:
Michael Mann: The inside scoop on 'Public Enemies' | The Big Picture | Los Angeles Times
Some interesting tidbits about Ali in there.
Can't wait for another great Mann experience. Has there been a period piece shot on handheld...
There are more 'Mann moments' in the director's cut. There's also a great Foxx-Trudy conversation in a diner that strengthens their relationship a fair amount.
In any case, I think the reason this film moves faster is because the characters are in a constant, unending state of flux, dealing...
Those apple.com featurettes are indeed fantastic. I love watching B-roll- seeing the interactions between the director and actors. Mann in particular, with his almost absurd level of attention to detail (I'm thinking about that dance featurette).

Nathan
Doug,
I think grain is an acquired taste. I can see how it could be very annoying to some people. I've seen people here get really worked up when a movie is shot on Super35 instead of Anamorphic, but it really doesn't bother me. For me, it has an organic quality- I love shooting on hi speed...
I hear you, Chuck. I have a lot of respect for Cameron, Tony (I was one of 5 people to like Man on Fire and Domino), and even Bay at times, but I think Mann is on such a vastly superior plane that he makes the others seem like much lesser filmmakers in comparison, despite their often...
Mr. Crawford,
If this was Michael Bay, Tony Scott, or even Jim Cameron, I'd be with you all the way. But I think the fact that this is Mann working from his own script, with final cut, demands some deeper contemplation. His obsession with thinking through and perfecting every element of his...
One more thing- Spartan is another film that assumes that its audience is completely knowledgeable about its subject matter.
Something else I should add is that there's an endless amount of quotable lines in this-
"There's undercover, and there's which-way-is-up?"
"This group goes from zero...
Yeah, the whole time I was thinking, I can't wait to see this properly on dvd, even though I was at the Arclight in one of their biggest screens. I think I need to see it again, and somewhere other than the front row :)

Nathan
Runtime is 132 minutes 33 seconds. BBFC has the precise runtime, down to the seconds and # of feet and frames of film. This number includes credits. Early test screenings were 3+ hours, then 149 minutes, then 146, and now the final cut is 132.5. I assume he's just been whittling the film down to...
For me, Mann's films, more than any other director, need a second viewing to be fully appreciated. My first viewing for every single one of this films has always been the least rewarding- even though I usually like or love them on first viewing. My first Mann exposure was Heat, and it was also...
Yeah, I watched it, although I swear there were more commercials than content. The HBO First Look link from above is also really excellent, particularly the part about Mann having Colin go on a simulated drug run without Colin being told it was simulated!
Is it me, or is there not that much...
Another update-
The first actual official reviews are out, and they pretty much expose the several 'bad buzz' articles for what they are- rumors and hearsay. Both of these guys are over the moon about the movie. I haven't been this excited for a film in ages, and I'm always excited about...
For those interested, TASCHEN is releasing another one of their classy books in September, this one on Michael Mann.

Also, here's a tentative, unofficial soundtrack listing, although it appears to be legitimate-
1. "In The Air...
I've seen next to nothing of the series, but that is seriously one hell of a clip. The use of the song against the movement of the car is intoxicating.

A lot of people I talk to seem to be under the impression that this is another low-quality tv-to-movie adaptation of a show that doesn't need to happen, a la Bewitched, or that it is closely connected to the 80s tv show of the same name. The only connection the new film has to the show is the...
That HD trailer is ridiculous. I'm convulsing on the floor. This is a ballsy advertising campaign. Clearly going for the more adult crowd. Great, great posters.

Nathan
Jason, thanks for clarifying your position. I'm glad you don't mind Michael Bay. He is a great guilty pleasure of mine. Although in my mind he does not approach Michael Mann (esp in terms of content), he can sure as hell frame a shot. The Island is a beautiful, beautiful film to look at.
As a...
