A Few Words About A few words about...™ It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World -- in Blu-ray

Theres something to that, LDs definitely looked better on SD televisions of any type, I don't think it's the LCD but the fact that running an SD signal into an HD display really makes it look worse, perhaps its the extra scaling and processing the TV has to do to show the image, but the old CRTs...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World -- in Blu-ray

The 154 minute version has always felt truncated to me, but I grew up with the Laserdisc version for years before I saw the short version.

The LD was not made from a single print, but from the theatrical version with pieces sewn into it in the wrong places. The version on the LD isn't something that could be projected at a festival like this. It will be the general release version

I've been looking at it for 17 years and I just thought I was an idiot.

I JUST showed this film to someone for the first time 2 weeks ago, and when we came to that shot I looked for it and I had the same idea about it you did! Thank you so much for this post because I always thought I was an idiot for not being able to see what they had done even though I knew it...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World -- in Blu-ray

So basically it wasn't a matter of removal of material, but an actual restructuring with scenes reordered etc. So in a perfect world, you would have a disc with somewhat complex branching to deliver the option of either the very initial edit that played for 4 weeks or the shorter general...

Then what was everyone spending so much time and effort trying to restore?

RAH, What did Kramer feel about reconstructing the longer version, if you're aware? Due to his participation in the LD I had always incorrectly thought he preferred a longer version and that he did the general release cut out of need for more screenings. Good to be learning the truth at least.

Thanks for the clarification Bruce. I never thought anyone but Kramer made the trims, but it seems like it was a matter of the film going wet from the lab to the premiere. More time was needed to get it where he wanted.

Bruce, This is the first time I'd heard that SK wanted to trim the picture to the current length. I had always thought/assumed that the roadshow length was closer to his wishes, even though I also imagined he was in charge of the general release edit as well. Might I ask where you learned that...

Thank you for the reply. This is truly sad situation, especially so as it didn't have to be this way. At the least I hope someone at some studio somewhere takes it as a call to action, so that it isn't all in vain. Also, thank you again for all you do, it is so greatly appreciated. No news as of...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World -- in Blu-ray

A question for RAH: If/when the restoration of the long roadshow cut (~192 minute version) happens, is the intent to recut to that version, with all other trims that exist going into some sort of (hopefully organized) deleted scenes section? Like many, I'm most familliar with the LD edit, and...
