Agreed...it's almost more of a dramatic film with music (like Cabaret and A Star Is Born) with surprisingly gritty (and modern) performances by Doris Day and James Cagney.
Kathryn Grayson's piercing, migraine-inducing soprano is a major turn off for me. There's a lot of other great performances in film though, including Ann Miller, Bob Fosse, Tommy Rall and James Whitmore (more than 40 years before his appearance in The Shawshank Redemption.) and Cole Porter's...
