A little OT, but "the internet" had taken off before the SW SEs were released. There was a LOT of discussion about the movies when they came out, and the general consensus back then ,t oo, was that "Empire" was the best. I don't agree, but that's what most people seemed to think. Of course, it...
That was author Jonathan Franzen. I assumed he refused all promotion, all interviews and all book signings too, but of course he didn't. So much for "the strengths of the book itself".
I remember reading about this guy, and it was just ridiculous how concerned he was about who was to be given...
The movie looks like crap, and I normally like "chick flicks", as long as they're well made (good chick flick="One true thing", bad chick flick="Practical magic"). It doesn't have to do with snobbishness anymore than the bashing of "Scooby Doo" or "Batman & Robin" has.
But in this case it...
Well, I'll most likely be going to "Bad CompanY" this weekend, if it helps anyone's predictions. :)
I agree that it'll probably make at least in the mid 20's, simply because of the names involved and because it's a fluffy traditional action comedy, something that hasn't been released in a while...
Hey, Terrell, don't take it personally, I certainly enjoy your input in this thread, so keep posting.
But I do wonder about that 375 vs 350 statement above. :)

Ib liked AOTC, but the few people I've talked to who have seen it weren't very impressed with it. Several online comments are very negative too. I agree with those who say it's probably split pretty evenly.
Then again, looking at EW's "Critical Mass" poll on their website gives it an A from all...
Spiderman is now #8 on the all-time unadjusted chart, according to the Mojo. It kicked out LOTR from the Top 10, that was a short stay up there for that movie...
/Mike
Malcolm, I'm with you about "Spider-Man"'s screen count. I was thinking the same thing when I got the Mojo's screencount e-mail this morning, that some of the multiplex prints will be cleeared out and sent to smaller theaters, to make way for newer releases. I don't know what the actual screen...
I wouldn't say "leaps and bounds". The adjusted gross for the opening day of "Phantom Menace" is $31.2M, for the opening weekend it's $71M. Compare that to AOTC's $30.1M and $80M, respectively. It's ahead, but not by much.
Still, it's another sign that the traditional idea that sequels always...
I think the number of screens is more important as for how many screenings PER DAY that they can squeeze in, than for the number of available seats.
If I come to see a movie at 6:15 PM, and there's only 2 screens showing it, it might start at 6 on screen 1 and then at 7:30 on screen 2, then at...
I'll be seeing AOTC on Saturday for the first time, if anyone cares. So you can up your estimates with $4.50.
I was there opening day for TPM, but I just couldn't get that excited about AOTC, especially after the excellent "Spider-Man", which kinda saturated my taste for blockbuster movies for...
If I understand you correctly, that means that "Titanic" is definitely safe now that "Spider-Man" dropped 52% on Monday compared to last Monday. It brought in $5.2M yesterday, for a total of $228M now, according to the Mojo.
/Mike
If the estimates are correct, that's a -37% drop. That's a pretty spectacular number after a $115M opening. I wonder what SPider-Man has that other movies don't. I loved it, but there are lots of other movies I've loved that haven't made those numbers. :)
/Mike
That's not a disastrous drop either, -65% from Sunday to Monday. Can you imagine the numbers if it had opened on a holiday weekend? $11M is more than the entire weekend box-office for the 2nd place movie, "The Scorpion King".
Speaking of estimates... I sold Spiderman at H$90/share on Hollywood...
I believe that the studio in this case (and in other cases of very easily marketed, high-profile projects) has made a LOT of the money back already thanks to foreign sales and merchandise licensing, so they don't necessarily need to bring in as much money percentage-wise as they do on other...
http://www.boxofficemojo.com reports that the actuals are in: $114,844,116
Friday: $39,406,872
Saturday: $43,622,264
Sunday: $31,814,980
I was afraid that the $114M estimate might have been wishful thinking (remembering some of the overestimates that New Line made for LOTR), but apparently...
Oh man, I just got the box office numbers in the e-mail, and saw an estimate of $114M for Spider-man!!! I had to go here and dicsuss it of course. :)
That's insane... but in a good way. :)
I figured the numbers would be big though, I saw it on the 10:30 show this morning and it was nearly sold...
