A Few Words About A few words about...™ Once Upon a Time in America - Extended Director's Cut -- in Blu-ray

Immersive for me is the difference between watching TV and watching a film in a (home)cinema.

Yes, it's immersive. I like to move my head as necessary. :) But this is for large screens in cinemas. At home it's too close.

I prefer to sit in a cinema between 1.25 and 0.75 screen heights away. At home it's closer to 2. That is immersive but not really sticking one's nose to a screen. It depends on the kind of cinema if sitting in the first row is a great place or really too close. Usually I sit in the first third...

Indeed, the closer you sit relative to the image the more it is an issue (and when projecting on a "big" screen one tends to sit closer) and vice versa. At 15 Mbit/s things look usually still decent and only direct comparison to 30+ will show what's missing or has been added. Entropy...

It's no nonsense at all. A BD 50 can also hold 8 hours or 10, even 15. The average bit rate just goes down and down till it reaches poor streaming levels. Relevant is the average bit rate and entropy of the material to be encoded. For new 4K the entropy is high and 15 Mbit/s is far from optimal...

Another issue with the new (and old) BD is Warner's refusal to put a film this long on 2 discs, instead of cramming it all on one. The bit rate is 15 Mbit/s average and that is far from optimal. Given the new transfer is 4K I'm tempted to wait for the 4K BD even if the colours should be correct...

The DCP is playing nearby too soon so I will probably check it out.

There are no problems whatsoever to make objects on 35mm films shot in the 80s look red with today's technology. Even when they were originally shot green or blue or black and white. :)

Maybe we should start a petition to release a version of the new scan with the old colour timing applied. I really don't want to miss out on the added detail from the 4K scan, but neither put up with any revisionist colour grading.
