Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

It's way too early to be conjecturing Best Picture nominees; nothing that's in release now will merit serious contention. And who knows what may be coming under the radar in November/December?

Since when is Best Score only a technical Oscar?

FOTR is still playing on one screen at two different first run theatres here in Madison, though I expect that will stop when AOTC opens tomorrow and they need to open up space. I pity any movie that is neither AOTC nor Spidey--they're not going to be able to get any screens at all! ;)

Didn't someone 50 or so pages ago say there was no way that LOTR would ever last in theatres until AOTC came out? Looks like they managed to do it. :)

The local theater that was down to one showing a day the first few days that the preview was added has now boosted it back up to 3 showings a day. So apparently the response has been good. The newspaper also still has sizable ads trumpeting the preview footage. There may be some life in this...

Really? I thought that they were doing a pretty good job of getting the word out. There was a big ad in the local paper at least 2 days last week, and out of the 2 hours of television I watched all week, three times I saw an advert saying now with special preview footage of The Two Towers...

Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

Craig, that's an interesting bit of intrastudio politics that I hadn't thought of. New Line could be going to milk this till it bleeds just to give daddy AOL a bigger "told you so." My question is, how much control, really, does the studio have over how long a movie stays in theaters? How is...

Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

Yes, I find the numbers in Japan frankly shocking. I would have thought that as steeped as anime is in the concepts of LOTR that it would have been huge. But I guess this shows the difficulties of predicting the vagaries of the tastes of other countries.

Personally, I think they waited too long to add the Two Towers Teaser to FOTR; it's going to be at the $1 cinemas by Oscar time at the rate it's going and what the hell kind of box office boost is that going to give you? I can't imagine a wide re-release even if it does sweep the Oscars (fat...

Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

That is excellent news, Dave. As I've mentioned before in this thread, box office is usually no big deal to me, except in this case it measures how much rope New Line is willing to give to Jackson for TTT and ROTK. Giving him time to do some more character development in TTT will definitely...

Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

The Golden Globes shutout makes me believe (as I'd already suspected) that FOTR will not get any Oscars except possibly for effects, and damned few nominations. That's disappointing, but a definite aspect of the Academy's disdain for fantasy/scifi/horror that has always been a major part of...

There's no way ET is doing $200M in rerelease; everyone has it on video, and the DVD is coming out in a few months. If it's lucky, it might do $50M, but I'd guess more like $35M.

Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

I have to say that I'm greatly relieved that LOTR is doing so well at the box office (I'm doing my part!). Usually, grosses are a 'big whoop' to me but this is so different, since the success dictates how much rein Jackson will be given with TTT and ROTK. I'd hate to have seen them compromised...

Okay - which will get the biggest box office - HP, LOTR or Monsters Inc?

Speaking of box office, is it just me, or is this the worst possible time imaginable to be opening a movie about a guy who turned to Islam and refused to be drafted? This has the makings of the same sort of legendary disaster as when D.W. Griffith's anti-war/hatred Intolerance opened on the...

When considering the Female Factor, don't discount that Viggo Mortensen looks like a somewhat darker Fabio, who sells more books (via the cover) than Steven King. The LOTR trilogy has an enormous readership amongst women as well; most intelligent women I've known adore it (of course that could...
