Burstyn is 90, so I'd think she was only available for a limited amount of time and that may have been specified in her agreement to return. I also understand they shot most of her scenes before general filming began on the movie.

    The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

From Deadline, it does sound like they bought the rights to the franchise, and not just rights to make one trilogy of films. So they'll be milking it to try and get their money back: (Deadline) Universal/Blumhouse/Morgan Creek’s The Exorcist: Believer is opening to $28M at this point in time...

Thursday previews were $2.85 million; weekend expected in high $20's to $30 million. Budget is reported at only $30 million, so it only has to reach about $90-100 million worldwide to start being profitable.

They already announced this is a planned trilogy, so they have to stretch that idea over three films. Most ideas can't stand up to that sort of stretching.

    The Exorcist: Believer (2023)

I enjoyed the TV series that was on a few years back. Season One was a sequel of sorts to the first two films (reportedly it was being prepared as a potential movie sequel, then they shifted it to TV). The second season was a different story/location involving the same priests. Looks like it...
