I agree the Criterion restoration looks pretty good, but if they had a pristine o-neg it would look A-MAZ-ING. As it stands it just looks very good considering the circumstances.

Its never going to look great since Toho junked the original negative decades ago. And even many of their Kurosawas (particularly the early ones like Stray Dog and Ikiru) today only survive on dodgy master-positives.

One must wonder what's holding up US dvd releases of Return of Godzilla and Vs. Biolante. I really want to see those!

I wouldn't say that. Their release of King Kong vs. Godzilla looks looks like it's yellow layer is on its last legs.

Because Toho is bizarrely anal about restoration for reasons that make little to no sense (revisionism or something like that).
