Which might be the reason Brokeback is getting a lot of support right now. Nobody wants to be the voice of dissent because to not like it is to be a bad, homophobic, culturally insensitive person.

RE: LAFCA Nice to see William Hurt pick up Supporting Actor for History of Violence.

I think we have a misunderstanding here. Of course an academy member could vote anonymously against Brokeback on their ballot without fear of any backlash. That was my whole point - a silent contingent of those who don't like the film could undermine its chance to win the Oscar. I was saying the...

As the reviews and support for the film suggest, though, there is a strong contingent out there that does indeed love Brokeback and think that it is genuinely a great film, moreso than I've seen for almost any other film out there, Quentin. I wouldn't project your opinion onto the voters...

Ah, if Munich is truly fading, Brokeback just clinched it. It's socially progressive and it makes people cry. The Academy won't be able to resist, unless there's a secret backlash of those who don't want to announce themselves for fear of being labeled homophobic or culturally insensitive, as...

Yeah, but the Academy doesn't exactly have a historical prejudice against drama ;) Anyway, we're in agreement that this year it has a shot at a nomination.

Kong and Rings may be totally different stories, but they're still in the same epic fantasy adventure mold. In any other year I'd say Kong was out, but with the weak line-up this year, it might get in if the buzz stays as good as it is and the media starts churning out stories about how it saved...

Still better, I liked his headline "Murder of a Geisha" EDIT: Interestingly enough, Mrs. Henderson Present only has a 56% fresh rating from the Cream of the Crop critics. Looks like this really is a weak year for awards contenders...

I dunno. It might get nominated, but the length is going to hurt it. Almost all the reviews have been positive, but they also almost universally claim that the movie is at least 20-30 minutes too long and that the film is overall incredibly indulgent. The Academy might feel Peter Jackson has...

It's funny, in all the reviews I read of Geisha, nobody really likes the film that much, but they all expect it to garner major nominations...weird. It's not like Rob Marshall is Martin Scorsese or anything :) This really looks like the worst kind of awards bait.

I'm not convinced on Geisha. The movie's visuals look incredible, but during the trailer I cringe every time I hear Zhang Ziyi try to deliver a line in English: "A STO-ry like MINE has NE-ver been TOLD" Really? Looks like a pretty standard rise-up-from-poverty tale that's been told for...

My predictions for best picture: Munich Walk the Line Mrs Henderson Presents (in on the Weinstein factor) The Producers Brokeback Mountain (PC, well-liked, and Focus NEEDS award support to get straight-America into the theaters) Kong may replace Mrs Henderson if it ends up some sort...
