The Sound of Music 50th Anniversary Edition 2015

Is it just my ears, or does the blu-ray audio for Hello, Dolly! not suffer the same problem, or at least not as dramatically? Sometimes it seems that the more popular something is, the more they mess with it. My favorite rendition of the SOM audio is still the first widescreen laserdisc, ca...

The Sound of Music 50th Anniversary Edition 2015

I have a quad 8-track player and the quad 8-track of SOM. I concur with you, it has a lot of reverb and really not much directionality. I have read that back in 1965, Fox provided RCA with a two-track master and a three-track master, so if that is indeed correct, RCA really didn't have...

No, 2.0 only. I was kind of hoping that they would provide the quadraphonic mix they used for the quad 8-track back in that era.

Received my SACD and double LP today. SACD has a nice immediacy and sounds rather dry, but not unpleasantly so. Has a "studio" sound to it, not sure how else to describe it. The track order is like the 1965 LP, with Climb Every Mountain after MFT. My only complaint is that irksome intro to How...

The Sound of Music 50th Anniversary Edition 2015

I sometimes think the more popular the movie is, the more they futz around with it for home video. How about just a quality transfer of the original elements, please?

A great extra would be the 1973 re-premiere special hosted by Merv Griffin. I used to have an audio tape of that, but it was lost in a move. :( I remember, I think it was Charmian Carr or maybe Heather Menzies, telling Merv that she was going to appear in Playboy. He was startled and said, "I'm...

Apologies, not to make this thread about Thoroughly Modern Millie, but I was just looking at the sheet music, and I noticed The Tapioca has an intro verse that is not heard in the film. "The way this dance is catching on is absolutely outrageous. Not since the measles or the mumps has anything...

My comment about Millie being recorded at Fox is based on the 1997 edition of the Robert Windeler biography "Julie: A Life on Stage and Screen" pages 143 and 144. quote: She [Julie] and Previn worked doubly hard on the post-production dubbing of her musical numbers in 'Thoroughly Modern...

Besides songs, Mr. Edward's cut omits some of Julie's best acting IMO by shortening the rainstorm sequence. Interesting about the sound in TMM. Julie insisted on recording the music at 20th-Fox because she felt they had superior recording techniques.

I was always confused when I saw the movie on late night TV (I never saw it first run) because so many songs from the album and pics from the gatefold were never in the shorter version they ran on TV. The color on the laserdisc is beautiful, I am not sure what happened in between. The DVD also...

The Sound of Music 50th Anniversary Edition 2015

I realize rereading this today that I may not have been clear that my first paragraph is not about the 50th Anniversary edition with 27 tracks, but about what the original LP recording contained and what I believe will be on the SACD and the 16 track edition. It is confusing because there is a...

The Sound of Music 50th Anniversary Edition 2015

The vocal portions on the Sony version are as heard in the film. Musical portions are shortened in some cases, and the prelude before the title song is a shorter version recorded for the album, but the vocal is as heard in the film. 16 on 17 omits the dance portion and has an ending specially...

For what it's worth, MAME was released in letterbox format on laserdisc. That is probably why AMC was able to show it OAR.

The Sound of Music 50th Anniversary Edition 2015

AMC aired SOM on July 4th, 1996, and it was letterboxed. (The asterisks after the titles indicate letterbox format.) That was a week of seriously good movies. There are a few errors in the text; SOM was Julie's third movie, not second, and Saul Chaplin was not a chaplain.

I have always wished that Columbia/Sony would release the quadraphonic mixes of A Little Night Music, Company, Funny Girl, Annie, No No Nanette (and any others I don't know about) on SACD. I still play those LPs from time to time, although I have no way to really decode them properly, but the...

I wish I was as enthusiastic about the new soundtrack CD. It is still missing things that are on the gold CD and not all of these tracks are from the masters. For starters, the opening track is as heard on the soundtrack LP, not as heard in the film. The Gold CD included the music as heard in...

"Whisked out of my hands" is exactly how it was! They were actually a bit confrontational, as though I were trying to steal it. They asked me if I took it out from behind a counter. I said, "No, there's a big box of them on display in the DVD section." In a harsh tone the lady said, "Well, there...

Went to Costco today (heaven help me) and they had SOM 50th blu multi-disc out for sale - but when I got to checkout it wouldn't scan and they told me it had been put out by mistake. After I loaded the car, I went back in to try another cashier (they can ring up items that don't scan as...

I enjoyed the Lady Gaga segment (pleasantly surprised) and I was touched that she was so awed by Julie. And of course, Julie is a pleasure anytime. But what I didn't care for was how they edited the clips from the movie. SOM is already thought of as so "sweet" and every moment they chose...

OK, I'll stop after this. I just find this amusing. It is a "plain wrap" version of the soundtrack for Latin America. Julie and Chris are the "protagonistas"! It looks like an official release, however, on RCA records.

You're more than welcome for that article! I was happy to find that I had saved it. IMO, that original widescreen laserdisc was terrible. Oh, don't get me wrong, it was a delight to see it at home in OAR at last. But the print was very faded and dirty. Not dirty - filthy! I have to say...

Robert - I have to agree. The color of the blu-ray does not bother me as much as it does you, but I don't care for the sound. So, yet again, speaking only for myself, SOM on home video is an "almost". We'll see what the 50th looks like, if indeed, it is different at all.

I traveled back in time 20 years and found an interesting article in the Nov 1994 VIDEO magazine about the creation of the 30th Anniversary laserdisc and Gold CD.
