Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

These things are all related. Whether it's due to an inability to see the difference (physiological or hardware-related or whatever), or simply an indifference to it, a sizable portion of the public believe that Blu-ray offers nothing worthwhile over DVD. Considering the fact that DVD still...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

All of which is fine. Except that he didn't frame his argument as, "I'm not able to notice a difference" or "The improvement in quality isn't important to me personally." His assertion is, "DVD and Blu-ray are absolutely identical and anybody who tells you different is a liar trying to scam...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

I ran into another of these clowns on Facebook this morning. He's dead-set adamant that DVD and Blu-ray "look near identical" on a supposed "high end Samsung" 65-inch TV. The most I could get him to concede is that, "The Blu is 5% better. MAYBE." Some people simply don't want to know the truth...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

There's no conspiracy here. Nobody at the studio wants to prevent you from upconverting a DVD. When played on an HD screen, the DVD has to get upconverted anyway in order to show a viewable picture, regardless of whether you do it in the disc player or the TV. It's not possible to watch a DVD on...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

While the DVD disc is standard-definition, close to 100% of viewers today will be plugging that player into an HD (or 4K) screen. Although, yes, the TV or display itself can upconvert, oftentimes you get better results having the disc player do that. The processing chips are the same ones the...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

I haven't shopped for DVD-only players in ages, but I'd assume that most of them offer upconversion as a standard feature by now. That was pretty common even before Blu-ray debuted.

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

One of them claimed to have a 68" TV and couldn't see any difference between DVD and Blu-ray. I didn't get into it with him about how far away he sits or what settings he uses. Didn't seem to be any point in questioning him further. At a certain point, people will believe what they want to...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

Some of them seem to genuinely believe that upconverting a DVD turns it into high-definition, and they can't comprehend how that's any different than Blu-ray. "My DVD player is set to 1080p. It's 1080p now. That makes it a Blu-ray!"

Not sure what this has to do with streaming specifically.

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

As an addendum to that^, one of my sons wanted to watch Spider-Man: Far From Home this weekend. I don't happen to own a copy of that one, as I got burned out on Marvel a while ago. I assumed we'd be able to stream it on Disney+, but guess what, they dropped it and the movie's now only on Starz...

Would Killing DVD Improve Blu-ray and 4K UHD’s Fortunes?

I'm in a movie collector group on Facebook, the purpose of which is nominally to support physical media. It seems that most of the posts there on a given day are people showing off how many DVDs they picked up at thrift stores or yard sales, a few bucks for a pile of them. I generally try to...
