True enough, and to be honest, I generally prefer the 16:9 versions of those seasons, even with the occasional flubs. It's not like the regular 4:3 version didn't also have its share of boom microphones dipping down into the top of the frame, anyway.

Right, and shooting in 3-perf this way saved them a lot of film (and thus a lot of money) versus shooting the traditional 4-perf format that feature films used. Some of them took this more seriously than others. Famously, the 16:9 transfers for Buffy the Vampire Slayer have a number of flubs...

The 16:9 HD versions of Gilmore Girls have a significant number of scenes where the characters will be cramped together in the center of the screen with empty space around them on the sides. Indeed. This movie makes a nice companion piece to Branagh's Hamlet, which I'm still hoping will get a proper remaster from 65mm some day.

It may not be the sort of title that immediately generates tons of excitement, but Before Night Falls is a very good movie and I'll be happy to upgrade it from DVD.

It's really not at all unusual for two different scans performed years apart to have slightly different cropping. depending on how the equipment is calibrated. I'd imagine that the process for striking prints back in the day had similar issues - not to mention that theatrical projection has...

I'm going to assume no video remastering either, even though a number of the titles could really use it.

I'm assuming they mean this one from 1980. Looks like it ran two seasons comprised of a TV movie pilot followed by 37 additional episodes. Not sure that really qualifies as a "miniseries." Also, it was on NBC, not HBO. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flamingo_Road_(TV_series)...

DVD is still the format of choice for libraries, schools, and similar institutions. Criterion undoubtedly gets a lot of DVD sales through those channels.

The difference here is that Warner Bros. owns all of its own back catalog, whereas Netflix had to license older content.
