So I've had this system set up for a few weeks now.
I was pretty happy with it, but it seemed like overkill for watching movies on my 50" LG plasma -- and there was the pesky sync issue. I think I fixed it, but mentally I was always looking at every word and every lip movement. But more...
I have no idea how these measure up to other systems - it's my first real surround setup - but I'm really happy with how the bookshelf speakers sound with the rest of the system. (Sorry, I realize that's probably not very helpful in answering your question)
Mike, I think that's definitely in the cards -- I used to do that kind of thing with friends and roommates regularly during my years in Boston. (Also had a lot of musicians in my circle then.) We'd also do different theme nights. For instance, one popular one was for great "Side 1, Track 1"...
So turning the "lip sync adjustment" to "off" (it was set to "on" out of the box with the AVR), seems to have solved the sync issue. I'm guessing the AVR was compensating for an issue that wasn't there.
Set the speakers to 80hz, and it sounds good to me (I think it came set at 100hz out of the...
Oh... any suggestions for what frequency settings on the AVR to use for the speakers? Apparently on the receiver I can set them different for the fronts, center, and surrounds.. of course, this all might as well be in a foreign language for me. I think the default was 100hz.
In briefly checking the settings on the receiver, I noticed one called "Lip Sync Adjustment" and it was turned "on" by default. When I turned it off, it appeared to be better -- but by that point I had watched the same clip so many times I was losing my sense of it... so will take another look...
I've noticed that all of the Blu-rays I've tried seem to be playing ever so slightly out of sync... at the moment, it's set up playing with a PS3 going through the Onkyo... tried both bitstreaming the audio and letting the player decode, and it doesn't seem to make a difference either way.
Shot...
Might've just been the WS record. I just put on Tegan and Sara's latest album which I picked up at their concert in February 2013 and haven't been able to play since I got it... and it sounds great! It's at least equal to the 320kps rip I did of the CD that I've been listening to since last...
Step a little closer...
I just finished wiring everything together, and turned it on for the first time about half an hour ago. Speaker placement isn't final. Needed to get everything out of the box and a rough idea of how much space it all takes up, figure out about where I want things, so...
If all goes to plan, today could be the big "plug the speakers in" day. Just wanted to send my thanks again to everyone here who offered their help and advice with getting the speakers and receivers and proper wires!
For speaker wire… I've read that the general rule of thumb is 16 gauge is fine for under 50 foot lengths? Is that true? I don't think any speaker will be more than 15 feet away from the AVR.
Banana plugs… worth the trouble and extra expense, or no?
Also still a little confused on connecting...
Gotcha! Thanks for clarifying.
Just out of curiosity, if I used the wrong one (not an RG59 or RG6), would it just sound poor, or would it actually do damage to the system?
Thanks for the tip, Wayne, much appreciated! And thanks for the cable clarification, Schan, that's what I figured... I think I have some decently high quality RCAs lying around the house (gold plated and cable thickness similar to the ones Doug recommended at Monoprice), so I think I may just...
Thanks Doug, those all seem reasonably priced (and I kinda like that the description at the top says "fancy connector").
This may be a stupid question, but I see that the receiver has a "Pre Out (Subwoofer)" jack with left and right RCA connections, and the sub has a "Line In" for a left and...
Hi Doug - thanks for the tips.
As far as the individual components into the receiver, that's where I feel reasonably competent. Pretty much everything will go HDMI into the receiver, and then one of the receiver HDMI outputs will go to the television, and the other will go to the (future)...
So I ended up going for the Onkyo 560 to go with the speakers -- figure it was cheap enough that in a couple years, if I end up in a larger space where I need more volume than the thing can provide, I can upgrade then and not feel too bad about it.
I hate to admit it, but I've never set up...
Thanks for the heads up on the difference between HDMI Zone 2 and "2nd HDMI output" -- could've very easily been confused by that one!
I just took a look at the pics of the back panels of the Onkyo 560 and 626 that I had been looking at last night, and their HDMI outputs read "Out Main" for one...
Just for the sake of due diligence, Pioneer has an AVR that seems like it does everything I want, Amazon's got it at $350 - Pioneer VSX-1123. Any thoughts on that? Any advantage to having the same brand speakers and AVR, other than the labels matching (which matters not one bit to me)?
Awesome -- if you're able and have time later when you're not on your phone, feel free to link one (if it's too much trouble, no worries)... I'm at work now but will take a look when I get home later.
Now I just need to get a decibel measuring app or something like that, so I can get a sense of...
Schan, that's really helpful, thank you! (for both the amps question and the different sources at once question)
What I found online for the Onkyo 560 was 6.3 amps... putting that number through your guide comes up with 65.6 watts.. earlier you had suggested that 64 watts on these speakers...
One last question that I can think of -- with a receiver like the Onkyo 626 or 560, is it possible to use the HDMI passthrough to watch something from my cablebox on my TV, while at the same time listening to music from another input (like a record player)? I'm thinking there might be the rare...
Doug, thanks again, that's exactly the kind of information I was looking for. I wish I could have Amazon send you a commission on this, you've definitely earned it. I think one of the things we all fear when making these purchases is thinking that you've got the right stuff, liking what you...
Schan, apologies if I'm misreading what you're saying, I'm a little confused...
Re: your first point - You're saying that (in theory), 103 decibels (the "neighbor is complaining" level) uses up about 64 watts? Because if that's the case, then I think I'm fine with 85 watts! This system...
