Probably Thursday at 1:20am (after a Billy Joel concert if I'm still awake enough, shouldn't be a problem), and definitely Friday at 10:30pm. I imagine I'll see it again after that but no definite plans beyond Friday yet.
Nice! I have tickets to the 10:30PM IMAX 3D for Friday night (I work until 10pm on Fridays). I can't see the Thursday 7pm and 10pm showings because of a prior obligation, but I've also got a Thursday late night 1:20am RPX ticket just in case I can't wait until Friday night.
Speaking of Rian Johnson, I'm surprised at how long it will have been between movies when his finally comes out - Looper was 2012, and Episode VIII will be 2017 - that's a long time for an up-and-coming filmmaker to go between releases.
As a brief comment on Travis' aside, I agree completely. Clear sourcing in journalism - especially online - has almost become a thing of the past. Can't keep track of how many times I've opened an article only to discover halfway through that it's just summarizing another website's article...
I recent rewatched the unaltered version of A New Hope and I was surprised at how quickly the whole thing flew by. I was surprised how different it felt.
I recognize that objectively speaking, Empire is probably the best of the six films. But as far as which one I enjoy most and have the most fun watching, that's probably ROTS for me.
I thought the word was that they had essentially gone back to the Lucas outline. I had read that initially Michael Arndt had been hired by Disney to create a new screenplay that didn't incorporate the Lucas elements, but that when J.J. Abrams came on board, he and Lawrence Kasdan dumped the...
Yes, that's correct. I think there was a separate thread about the transition but I think the short version is that the standalone HTF app cost a lot to license without being as used as originally hoped. I think there's also a plan to switch the software the forum runs on so it displays better...
I think based on the narration in the second teaser that it's meant to be Leia (I think that shot plays while Luke's narration says "my sister has it" in reference to the force) - that's what I'm expecting when the movie comes out.
I think the Hobbits were 4K, but in general, it is rare. (I don't have American Cinematographer near me at the moment to double check.)
All of the Marvel movies are 2K. Gravity is 2K. The Martian and The Walk are 2K. Just about every title Fox has announced for future UHD release was...
I haven't read anything one way or the other, but if the film is covered in American Cinematographer they'll almost certainly mention it, and I'll be sure to pass it on then. Disney's "Tomorrowland" had a full 4K workflow earlier in the year, so it's not unprecedented for them.
I'm not sure that advance ticket sales necessarily translate into perfect gender attendance numbers.
I bought four tickets for a Friday 10pm showing of Force Awakens. I'm a male between 18-49, so far, so good. The problem is that the other three tickets are going to be used by females. By...
I saw the IMAX versions of "I Am Legend" (just a blowup, no IMAX-native footage) and "The Dark Knight Rises" in dome theaters.
The dome is a little tricky on 2.35:1 material, it kinda curves in a way that doesn't always completely go with the image, although they have a special projection lens...
I watched it probably half a dozen times the night it came out - actually fired up my projector just to watch it. I felt a little silly turning it on and getting the screen set up to play just that, and then turning the projector off to watch a regular TV show afterwards, but so be it!
It's tough, I've decided I'm not going to try it. I've tried it at home before, starting with Phantom Menace, and I finally had to give up halfway through Empire.
The problem for me was the first two or three were fun, but after that it just becomes about endurance and the movie itself seems...
I think 777-FILM/Moviefone had an online site that was starting up around then.
I know I didn't camp for Phantom Menace showings. There was an announcement maybe a month before opening night that tickets would go on sale at a set time over the phone via 777-FILM, so I just called that hotline...
It feels about the same to me in day to day life. On the Internet, there seems more hype this time around, but I think that's more about the Internet being more of a presence in our lives than it was in 1999.
In my circle of friends and family, I'm the one who is most excited for this - same...
Alan - I'm guessing they'll use the Lucasfilm logo with the SW cue that's on the digital versions at iTunes/Vudu/etc.
SilverWook - I remember seeing tickets scalped for The Dark Knight Rises midnight showing at Lincoln Square NYC. Someone had tickets on stubhub for something crazy like $150...
Here's a crazy thought that I would have thought unthinkable, but...
Is there anyone who thinks this could begin without the standard crawl, or at least without "Episode VII" displayed onscreen? "Episode VII" has appeared in pretty much none of the advertising (compare that to the prominence...
My opinion is "yes" - I don't think the presentation quality was be as high overall as it was for Star Trek Into Darkness, but I still think the IMAX presentation for Star Wars will be better than the non-IMAX presentation.
Well, define "real". If you mean will it be shown in 15/70 film, the answer to that is no.
The Lincoln Square IMAX theater used to show 15/70 film and has a screen with an aspect ratio of 1.44:1. However, they have replaced the film projectors with digital projectors that have a maximum height...
Really shocked at how few IMAX theaters are showing this in laser projection or 15/70 film. J.J. Abrams shot the film partially with IMAX cameras, meaning the ratio on those sequences will be 1.44:1. Unfortunately, the vast majority of digital IMAX screens are limited to 1.90:1.
Really...
List of IMAX theaters that are showing the film with the new IMAX laser projectors, and which are showing in 15/70 2D:

It looks like Lincoln Square in NYC, their flagship theater, will still not be...
Wish that was the case. The Lincoln Square IMAX theater (largest theater in North America, I believe), is sold out for the entire weekend. Sold out before 9pm too it seems. Which is not to say that everything is sold out, but the premium showings are going.
Yeah, that was the conclusion I came to... I should have just left the house the second the tickets started popping up instead of waiting until an hour of frustrating failures to head out, maybe I could have gotten my first choice theater if I had done that.
The thing is, though, when you tell...
My preferred theater was sold out, so backup theater it was - websites didn't work, apps didn't work, finally just took a subway over to the AMC Empire 25 in NYC and got IMAX 3D tickets for Friday night at 10:30pm. Also picked up a Thursday 2am IMAX showing, but not sure if I'll keep that or...
