A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Man Who Knew Too Much -- in Blu-ray

I agree 100%. I don't find anything "musical" (in the genre definition of the word) about either appearance of the song in the film. But the bottom line is a lot of people have issues with the song and its appearance in the film, for whatever reason, and they have every right. I'm not one of...

LOL. A very good point, as they did drop the book songs for the film. There are some muddy hybrids (Garland's A Star Is Born being another). But logically, if the definition of a musical is having someone perform a song on film (even as a performer to an audience) then the question of "Que...

Doris didn't hate the song. She just never thought it would be viable outside of the film as something people would want to listen to. She thought Columbia was wasting money to have her record it. But once it was a monster hit and she saw she was wrong about that, I don't think she had any...

True, but perhaps they're being a little too free in their definition. LOL.

That's because it's a musical about a famous singing group in real life, so of course it would show them performing. But if those were the only songs featured in a film about them, it would not be a musical, merely a film that features music, like The Fabulous Baker Boys. It's the other songs...

That definitely would have been interesting, especially as I feel Day had good chemistry with Rod Taylor in their two films together. I certainly wish she had accepted Mike Nichols' offer to play Mrs. Robinson in The Graduate. Ah well. The great what-if's of Hollywood history.

Actually, she was referring to the recording she made for Columbia Records. Both the label and her manager-husband, Marty Melcher, had to beg, cajole and practically force her to record the song. She thought it was fine for where it was in the film ("a kiddie song," she called it), but would...

That's very true and I think it does annoy many people. It's a matter of personal taste. I for one am more annoyed by the (imo idiotic) song the school children sing in The Birds.

?? It's really nothing like a song in a musical, where the character sings their internal thoughts as the character with full orchestral background. In this film, the song is song briefly a cappella (as it would be) as a lullaby, then again when the character performs the song at a piano at a...

I agree, the remake is richer and superior. I do love the original, but comparing the two, I'll watch the remake more often. And, my apologies to Leonard Maltin (or whoever on staff wrote that particular review), but I think the Albert Hall sequence is better in the remake than in the...

Spielberg and Lucas aren't my clients, but some of their contemporaries are, and I can tell you first hand, this is absolutely true. But, to all those suggesting fundraising or donations for TMWKTM, the fact remains that the major studios do NOT need funds raised or donated for...

Thanks. Your earlier posts in this thread certainly made it sound pretty urgent. I didn't think it was quite possible for them to be frozen in in time in 1983 condition with all the time in the world to get around to them.

So am I to understand that the deterioration of the elements to their current state happened in toto during the 20 or so years Hitchcock had them and none of it during the 29 years that Universal has had them? That seems to strain credibility that they have stopped aging. If that's the case...

It costs next to nothing to put a sign on a building. What matters is the treatment of the films. One grows weary of them paying lip service to the Hitchcock legacy, while allowing the basis of the legacy, the man's actual work he (and Alma) devoted their entire lives to, get short shrift at...

I've always liked Colin Higgins' work, going back to Harold and Maude. And I had the pleasure of meeting him once. 9 to 5 is one of my all-time favorites. Never cared for the film of Whorehouse, though. Thought they ruined a good stage show with the ill-advised changes, song cuts/additions...

LOL. Points taken. I can't speak for others, but when I talk about a studio, I mean the corporate setup, i.e. executives. The ones who chose what we will see and how much time and money will be spent on how we see it. But you are, of course, correct that was not clear. As far as TBLWIT...

The "studio" isn't just the people who handle the actual films. It is also the corporate heads. It's the exact same at every major studio. It's still under the umbrella of the studio. The budget doesn't come from God. It still comes from within the studio. They either care enough to set a...

What you are both saying is very true up to a point. "Expediency" is neither a valid excuse nor a valid explanation. They didn't have to release the set this year; they chose to. Having chosen to do so, they could have made sure it was of the quality of their own Essential Monsters set. They...

Now, now, let's be fair... they did call the set "The Masterpiece Collection." That shows respect for Hitchcock and his work. They're calling these films masterpieces, what MORE do you want??? This is a small, small outfit. It's not like they can afford to do with these films what Paramount...

Well crap. Oh well. I can't change it. Best I can do is write and/or email Universal and politely complain about the lack of quality on this title and FP and hope they get revisited at some point.

Well, actually, both of these posts are somewhat encouraging to me on a personal level re: TMWKTM. I only have a 50" display and I'm a bit more forgiving about most things (i.e. I could actually watch The Longest Day and not be bothered by the scrubbing. I saw it, but it didn't stop me from...

I understand that point to a degree, but this was taken further into something that makes no business sense at any level. The order comes from corporate that they want to do a blu-ray set of "The Masterpiece Collection." The people in charge of the elements should have responded (and possibly...

A Few Words About A few words about...™ The Man Who Knew Too Much -- in Blu-ray

How does this happen? How can something unwatchable get as far as actually being released? This is terrible news, especially the potential of losing the film, which is obviously far more urgent than a bad blu-ray. That would be inexcusable.
