That's the issue though. IMHO a person should not go looking for an recording just because it's sonically wonderful. You should go looking for a recording because you want that recording, and if it's good quality then so much the better. Case in point: A few years back I bought Goldsmith's THE...

Indeed. I have a few SACD and DVD-A discs and I just wasn't blown away by them at all. It may be that I was just unlucky with the discs I got, but frankly I don't think music needs to be in 5.1 sound. 2.0 is absolutely fine. Orchestral music, for example, when was the last time you listening...

Oh I didn't realise it was out in Italy. Sure enough I just found it here: THE SATAN BUG - Film DVD It mentions Italian DD5.1. Does it have an English track as well? I got stung with The Cassandra Crossing from Italy. Great anamorphic picture but no English language track :-( Oh that's...

The Satan Bug is an absolute classic! A staggeringly good thing that a few of the tapes were salvaged, a travesty that the others were destroyed. It sure beats the isolated music track on the laserdisc, but the laserdisc is still worth holding onto because there's still no sign of a DVD (as far...

Ah, splendid! :-) If you're a regular FSM customer then I'm sure you're as sweaty over the forthcoming Superman 8-CD set as I am! :-) I'd be very surprised if those Varese titles were to be re-issued because it would break their 3000 limit agreement - although they did just re-issue their...

You oughta try getting into soundtracks. Possibly the most expensive home entertainment hobby I ever could have become involved with - it makes movie buying seem almost FREE by comparison! Wait more than a few weeks after release and you could be facing this: Michael Kamen DIE HARD Varese...

Not at all - at least that wasn't my intention. And I have every intention of "upgrading" once the technology is at place that meets my needs. I am just (still) concerned that the toys don't start controlling the children and that pretty images don't overcome common sense (I can think of several...

"Best and most complete manner" is an important point to remember here. Let's take a theoretical example: Goldeneye. Let's say that Sony/MGM releases this on BD tomorrow and it's exactly the same "version" they released on UE DVD but, obviously, with higher resolution audio and video. Would...

Which is fair enough. But if I was buying into BD I'd be looking at newer titles first (i.e. the ones I wouldn't be able to play!) before looking at replacing older titles (i.e. the ones I could play!) So getting into BD is pointless at this point in time for anybody outside of Region A that...

It looks real messy though. From your site, for example, it looks like POTC 1 and 2 are Region 0 but POTC 3 is Region A. I'm in no rush seeing as how 99% of the movies that are currently out on BD I already have on DVD so I'd have to buy them again anyway. I'd rather do that when I know...

There's no real point doing that until multi-region BD players are a proven reality. I believe there are a couple of multi-region machines doing the rounds in Europe at the moment. When these reach the UK I might consider it. I will not limit myself to Region 2 (or Region B).

I have to agree. I used to love visiting The Digital Bits each day. I actually used to look forward to it. But now, when I go there, I either want to throw something at it because I'm constantly told that the DVD movie I just bought is crap compared to the oh-so-superior HD version, or I just...

Which, let's face it, is a LOT of people! I mean, 95% of people out there haven't yet invested in either format. And of those that have I'd be surprised if less than 75% haven't got the facility to play both formats, certainly those that post here. I don't see any point at all in having...

That's not how read it at all. Bill's exact words were "By the way... for those of you thinking maybe it makes sense to buy BOTH Blu-ray and HD-DVD to cover your bases, it would frankly be smarter just to buy neither". This particular sentence doesn't advocate Blu-ray. It advocates staying...

Interesting results. And IMHO not particularly surprising. These may be "film oriented" people but surely this is exactly the crowd that HD needs to be attracting! Multiple formats aside, the film is what it's all about.

Deep Rising is actually available anamorphically here in the UK (http://www.amazon.co.uk/Deep-Rising-...8170349&sr=1-1) but the version I got from Holland is both anamorphic AND has a DD5.1 soundtrack. I got it from Proxis.be but unfortunately it appears to have been deleted.

I would dearly love to get a HDTV. In fact I already have one in mind, the Sony KDL32D3000. The biggest problem I have at the moment is one of small children! It certainly wouldn't encourage ME to upgrade. When I buy a movie I want a movie, not a video game. I don't want to have to change the sound format during the movie either. Sure. I'd like the OPTION of changing audio/video settings during the movie but I don't want to HAVE to. Audio/subtitle...

I have no doubt that those particular titles would have come out either way. Wasn't Blade Runner one of the first DVDs released too? And there was only the one format. I'm sure we'd be seeing Blade Runner in HD now regardless of the format war. Plus bringing out the "big guns" is fine...

Except that the format war (and thus poor take-up by the general population) will undoubtably prevent the HD release of a TON of movies (I would estimate at least 90-95% of the titles that would otherwise have been released). There's an interesting update just been posted at The Digital Bits...

But surely (and I know this isn't the place, or the time, so I won't harp on too much) if you really only care about the movies the fact that the SD-DVD game is "tired" doesn't matter. As a DVD buyer I can get Miami Vice, the Bourne films, the Pirates films, Blade Runner, Close Encounters...
