On the commentary to THX-1138, Lucas says that after Episode III he's going back to experimental filmmaking. (By the way, it's a GREAT commentary, and the documentaries on disc 2 are among the best... Lucas sounds much more like an independant filmmaker than businessman on this set. Of course...
Well, I disagree that ESB is better than ANH, though I think it is a great film. My point is that there are many who discount every film but ANH. Again, I specifically said non Star Wars nerds (by definition, anyone posting to this thread is 1000% more of a SW nerd than the rest of the public)...
I bet there are a lot of people who want only A New Hope. A lot of non Star Wars nerds find the sequels (all of them) to be vastly inferior to the original.
Or they'll be watching the rather nice looking 2004 transfers, which really aren't that different from the originals anyway (and preferred by many in the first place).
Something to keep in mind: those screenshots from the new discs are 43 kbytes. The "fan" version that it's compared against is 185k (more than 4x bigger!!), AND it snipped off the black bars. That is a huge deal when it comes to JPEG compression. Don't pass judgement based on these shots...
Not as excited as I was when I heard the news, of course, but I too have never owned the originals in widescreen at all (the SE's were my first widescreen purchase on VHS). 'Tis only money. :)
I will never trust anything I see on AICN, ever. It doesn't mean they are wrong, but they are *so* wrong *so* often that it just doesn't matter what they have to say about anything.
Fair enough, I guess... and you're right, it is semantics. But it does not meet my standard for what I expect in a modern day DVD release. I like the films enough to buy them anyway though. I'm not unhappy enough to make a stand and go without this version of the film that I really do want quite...
No, it doesn't suit my quality standards just fine. I was bitterly disappointed when I heard that it would be nonanamorphic. But can you please tell me where I can find a copy of the original unaltered 1977 Star Wars that looks any better? You can't. I love these films, and taking away 25% of...
I don't think that was his point. Of course we all want the best quality release possible. But this release will be better than any other release of the original versions of these films. For me, that makes it worth buying. Yes, I would like it to be better. But I also doubt these will be...
For whoever said Bill Hunt confirmed it: he didn't confirm it, he merely passed along word that someone else had confirmed it. Bill just promised to get to the bottom of it himself, and until he does I'm not putting too much stock in it. If it's no better than a 16x9 upconversion of the LD...
Well, I was wondering that too... but I think they might suffer, at least Jedi. Especially if they put the pan & scam version on there too (dual layers have less than twice the capacity of a single layer). If the source is noisey, it is harder to compress and can be a muddied mess if not given a...
That's simply not possible. I've seen what is considered the "best" LD rip of the OT, and it is a muddied overcompressed mess (and it's upconverted to anamorphic). They cap these things from an analog source out of an LD player for crying out loud. I have no doubt even this non anamorphic...
Why do so many assume an HD Star Wars is coming for the 30th anniversary? It took 7 years of highly successful DVD market penetration for the OT to get released. What makes people think 1 year of an incredibly botched dual format mess is going to inspire him to release on HD so quickly? I...
