I think all the circumstantial evidence points to the reasonable assumption that Fox has Seasons 5, 6 and 7 ready to go -- and was ready to release them as part of a Series Set -- but came to realize, from here and other Internet forums (especially Amazon) that that would anger a majority of...
Well, there we go! It pays to complain on the Internet. Those of us who rightly complained about the plan to release 5, 6 and 7 only in a Series Set apparently have convinced Fox of the fairness of our point of view. The small minority here who told us to shut up at the risk of Fox not...
Listen, guys. If Fox announces separate season releases or a way to get 5, 6 and 7 separately, then you owe us "complainers" a big apology. On the other hand, if they announce they were going to release a Series Set, but changed their minds due to complaints, I'm not apologizing to anyone.
This is the most sensible thing said here. People were blaming the Amazon reviewers for the cancellation of something which, in the same sentence, they said hadn't even been announced yet. That's a new record in circular reasoning for the HTF. And, as Marty here points out, and it's...
You didn't address my "reductio ad absurdum" argument at the end of my last message. It's difficult to answer that one. If it would be outrageous to release one season always bundled with the previous seasons -- and I think every person on Earth would agree it would be -- it's almost equally...
Well, since you brought the word "asinine" into this, I think what's truly asinine is the way you're talking in circles. First it was said that Fox cancelled the release because people whined here and on Amazon. Then it was said it was stupid of people to whine, because the release was...
This is amazing. It's almost as if some of you are saying no one should ever complain about anything. People mostly said they wouldn't buy it under the circumstances. They didn't threaten other people into not buying it. Anyone who wanted to say they didn't mind Fox's plans were free to say...
This series never sold well from the beginning. That's why I called it unpopular. There were indications that Oprah Winfrey lobbied for it to be completed, after she put the cast on her show. Whatever the situation, if the complainers on Amazon pushed Fox to make the final decision to cancel...
There are indications from other sources that the release has been cancelled, but it's due to one thing, and one thing only. They're reluctant to release an expensive set of an unpopular series during a severe recession (which would be called a depression in older days.)
LOL -- I couldn't possibly disagree with you more. I used the analogy of an encyclopedia. Back in the old days, grocery stores would sometimes sell an encyclopedia, one volume a week. So you're saying it wouldn't have been unethical -- at all -- if after people bought the first 12 volumes...
I think -- hope! -- that what happened is they read this thread, understood the validity of the complaints, and are going to make it possible to acquire 5, 6 and 7 without rebuying 1, 2, 3 and 4. Either that, or the recession killed it, not this thread.
You all act as if ethics should never be considered. Isn't it possible someone at Fox has ethics and has paid attention to the valid complaints that the series' biggest fans would be required to buy the first four seasons again in order to get the last three?
The logic here mystifies me. Stores won't be willing to stock individual season sets, or a two volume complete series set, for a series that hasn't sold well ... but they will stock the complete series? They expect that to be the magical difference? If anything, due to the price, one would...
I'm not buying these excuses any more than I'm buying the DVDs. After watching business executives testifying in Washington, we see what they're really like. There have been some vague, general defenses here, but no one has addressed the issue as to why they couldn't have released the...
Even if it cost them somewhat more to do so, Fox should have reached the decision to release the Complete Series in two volumes, as I said earlier. I'd like to see a realistic "cost analysis" as to why it would not be profitable for them to do so, whereas a Complete Series stands a better...
I should hope so. I'd really like to know what went on over at Fox when this was being planned. Did anyone bring up the idea, which occurred to so many of us instantaneously, that this would be unfair to the show's biggest fans? Did they even discuss my idea of releasing the Complete...
Maybe those executives were laid off for the hare-brained idea of releasing a Complete Series set of an unpopular-on-DVD show at $178 in the midst of the worst recession in 70 years. In the specific case of "The MTM Show", maybe they could experiment with releasing the Complete Series in two...
Maybe I'm being idealistic -- or maybe I'm old enough to remember an earlier era when money wasn't the first, last and only consideration -- but purely as a matter of ethics, Fox should not require those who bought the first four seasons to rebuy them in order to get the last three seasons...
Yes -- and they get away with it because we let them get away with it. In what other area of life do you have to rebuy a part of something in order to finish getting the whole thing? I can't think of one. The irony is the only ones hurt by this scheme are the biggest fans -- the ones who...
Putting that happy face on the situation is fine ... and one will live longer letting everything go. But it's a questionable business practice, and I'm glad Fox is being criticized here. A somewhat reasonable analogy would be if you were paying off a car and midway through they told you in...
Well, then, I truly wish all series were released as Complete Series -- none of this waiting for years to see if a series will be finished. Of course, for something like "Gunsmoke," that could get expensive. But it's all the same in the long run.
Well, looking back, I shouldn't have used the word "outrage." You know, I guess like political commentators on radio and television, we tend to overstate the case when we write comments on Internet forums. It's a good way to get attention, isn't it? I really don't feel outrage over this plan...
Gary OS and Joe Karlosi are the most reasonable here. There is no defense to this plan. The lack of logic defending it is startling. So if MTM hasn't sold well in Season Sets, what makes anyone think The Complete Series will fly off the shelves? If anything, it'll sell worse. The largest...
According to the rules here, that should get you banned! I wouldn't recommend you getting into a contest with me as to who's smarter. You might not know it, but there are all kinds of things that go on today that would be unheard of in the older days. Younger people might accept them because...
This is a kind of bait and switch. Buy Season 1! Buy Season 2! Buy Season 3! Buy Season 4! You want Seasons 5 through 7 now, don't you? Well, Buy Seasons 1 through 4 All Over Again! (evil laughter) I can NOT believe there's anything other than outrage over this. Maybe it's a...
All of you who are saying, "Oh, thank you, thank you, Fox, for treating us with absolutely no respect" are the reason the companies get away with these things.
