Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

All the WKRP bootlegs being sold are apparently from those syndicated reruns, with most of the music but 3 minutes cut from each episode. They were taped off TV, not taken from masters, though. The older syndication version is no longer distributed; any station that wants to run the show gets...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Exactly. They were planning the second season, but they decided that the music was, as I heard it described, "too costly to keep in and too much trouble to take out." (Not that any fan should apologize for the controversy over the first season; it was well-deserved -- remember, they didn't...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Apparently Fox was thinking of releasing it but put it on hold when they realized that they realized that the music was too expensive to keep in but too much bad publicity to take out. And how did this become the WKRP-vs.-Buffy thread? Okay, I'll play: Buffy was excellent.

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

WKRP sold better than the other MTM series -- even with all the (deserved) negative publicity, the first season was one of the top twenty DVDs for its first week of release (none of the other MTM shows even came near that chart). I hear that based on the sales there were plans to do the second...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

They're getting this from Fox (along with other MTM productions) so I suspect it'll be the same package Fox sent out to Nick at Nite, the Comedy Network etc. -- with music changes. Fox may not even have the original music versions, and they're certainly not interested in clearing the music for...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

It sold well as far as I can tell. In its first week of release it was # 18 on the Billboard chart of top selling DVDs, which is really big for a 30 year-old series. (It didn't stay in the top 20 for more than a week, but TV shows usually don't.) I suspect that it might have sold better in...

Randy's expanded article is up. I have to say I don't quite understand Peter Staddon's response to the question of why they don't license the show out to a third party: That would make sense except that Fox's release is far more badly butchered than a third-party release would probably be...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

As I understand it, the original elements are lost (or at least not available), so the only copies of the show have the music and dialogue on the same track. Also, the music was sometimes played on the set so the audience could hear it. Which means that even if they could find the original...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

We could hardly know for sure unless we got an idea of every song used and how much it would cost, but I doubt that figure. Let's say a real rock recording usually costs somewhere in the tens of thousands. Some of the WKRP episodes, the ones that used six or seven songs, could therefore cost...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

That's a really good (and fair to both sides) article, and I don't just say that because I'm quoted in it. I do think it's a bit ironic that Peter Staddon brings up My Name is Earl as an example of a contemporary show that sells well -- because of course Fox brought that show out with a ton...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

They cut the scene where Johnny announces the name of the winner of the "Win a Date With a DJ" contest ("Congratulations, you lucky dog... make that lucky 'girl'"), because they didn't want to pay for the music underscoring it, "Beast of Burden" by the Rolling Stones.

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

There's footage cut from two scenes: the very beginning where Venus talks about being here to "brighten, tighten and enlighten your starlight hours" (this is replaced with an audio clip of Venus from another episode), and the end of the scene with Johnny, Andy and Bailey in the booth where...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

Yes. Fox bought out MTM in the late '90s and they now own all the MTM properties. MTM no longer exists, basically.

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

The thing is, there's a midpoint between clearing all the music (therefore necessitating a huge price) and cutting out almost all the music, which is what Fox has done. If Fox had cleared some of the songs -- let's say, clear songs that were intertwined with dialogue (instead of just cutting...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

By the way, here's a list of episodes that have actual cut scenes in addition to the music changes (a few of these cuts were made in the syndication version; most of them were cut by the DVD producers): Hoodlum Rock (22:18) - syndication version Bailey’s Show (24:35) - cuts the end of the...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

The reasons are that Fox was producing this set on a small budget, and you can't do a WKRP set on a small budget. Even if they kept the "essential" songs and cut the others, they'd still have to pay a fair amount of money. And Fox doesn't seem to have any kind of budget for TV on DVD these...

Turns out the discs are single-sided, though. That makes everything OK. :)

There is a note on the back that says "Some musical content has been changed from the original airings" or something like that. That doesn't really begin to describe it, though. You know, in normal circumstances I'm more OK with music replacements than most fans. I generally say that even if...

Press release (with different features than originally indicated) and artwork. The release doesn't mention the music issue, which I think is a little unwise. I think Fox will do better with this release if they're up-front about what has or has not been changed. (Even if they just bragged...

Here be specs, price & extras. The list price is $10 higher than the price of the similarly-packaged Bob Newhart Show sets (which are also three double-sided discs, and, oh, Fox, when are you gonna shed your addiction to double-sided discs?). I will hold out hope that this means they budgeted...

One thing I should say about this issue -- and this is true every time it comes up -- "george kaplan" can buy and not buy whatever he wants. If he doesn't want a set with altered music, he shouldn't be expected to buy it just to support the release of future seasons. We all have our own...

Enough already Fox. Are we EVER going to see WKRP released?

I don't know about Miami Vice, but one difference between WKRP and a variety show like SNL is that WKRP used the original commercial recordings of the songs, which means that everything has to be cleared twice: you have to clear the song, and you have to clear the recording.

That would be something I'd like to see studios do, actually, though I agree it's unlikely.

Some of the music. I don't know which songs will be kept and which replaced, but what I think is happening is that the songs more likely to be replaced are the very short snippets (five or ten seconds) that aren't essential to a scene. I hope they will have retained the songs that were really...
