    Noir Alley on TCM

Yeah, it sounds like Cochran's life is ripe for a noir film version itself. Dying mysteriously at 48 on a yacht with three women (who had zero navigational skills, ahem) after swinging his... lance through a phone book of actresses in Hollywood.

Okay, that wasn't much of a noir, but more like a melodrama. Not just for the ending, but for the slow pace and the gooey sentiment. And that title Tomorrow is Another Day. Isn't that the last line of Gone With the Wind? It was still a good film, and I particularly enjoyed the camera angles on...

    Noir Alley on TCM

This series has really changed my usually lazy anyway Sunday routine, where I now sit down in the afternoon to watch the latest noir installment just DVR'ed. It beats trimming bushes or mowing the lawn. But I still think it's an awkward time to schedule noir. And I don't have a pitch black...

    Noir Alley on TCM

Great noir film, but I forgot I already had it in a collection. No matter, the Mueller notes are always worth precipitating another viewing. So the movie was a bomb at the box office when it came out in 1948. No wonder. A mere three years after WWII, you're going to be dealing with this type of...

I actually enjoyed the interview more this time since Mitchum spoke up more and told some good stories. But yeah, I still prefer the non-interview intros.

Wasn't a big fan of Where Danger Lives. What a waste of Robert Mitchum to just have him play dazed and confused for 90 minutes, and subservient to a way too obvious, crazed wide-eyed femme fatale and poor actress Faith Domergue, who couldn't lick Barbara Stanwyck's left high heel.

I had the same reaction. He didn't give her enough prompting for a real interview, but her presence stepped on any prepared comments he would have had for the screening. She was just basically on display as Garfield's daughter. And about all she had to offer was 'he acted with his eyes.' Well...

Kim Novak's first scene in The Pushover. Whoah. Glad the Production Code Office didn't take a closer look at that scene. I loved the premise of this noir and the cast was perfect (though Fred MacMurray looking suspicious is always a bit obvious to me), but it was almost a play it was so...

I know I'm getting old when I record TCM's airing of "Night and the City" on DVR, and then 10 minutes in realize that I not only have seen it within the last year, but the Criterion is sitting in my bookshelf. Sigh.

I'm running a week behind on these but, wow, "Raw Deal," what a... 'breath of fresh air.' Non-stop plot narrative, great directing, acting, dialogue, superb cinematography and the perfect creepy noir score using a theremin, of all things (what an inspired use). I don't know why I was never...

    Noir Alley on TCM

Enjoying this 'series,' though I didn't like the copout ending of "Side Street." There is no happy ever after when the protagonists makes such a tragic mistake in noir; that's why it's noir. As noted in after comments, the original ending was changed and another writer softened the narration...

I enjoyed "Possessed" last week. Props to Joan Crawford for a brave performance, much without her usual slog of heavy makeup, and desperately wanting but being rejected by a man (even if the guy Van Heflin was such an obvious a-hole). The ending wasn't very NOIR, though, when the psychologist at...

A pretty awkward time to be watching Noir. Thank God for DVR (and on Sundays).
