Yes, it's really no comparison to WKRP, which may be the single most intelligent sitcom in the history of television. No Shakespeare, true, but still genius unlike some fast talking female vampire hunter. Duh. :D
Including the songs would definitely only help the artist, how many young kids out there know Ted Nugent, yet this wild 'n' crazy ole 70s rocker would most likely appeal to them the same way, say, Black Sabbath does.
Maybe by the time Bugger - I mean Fox - or whoever may own it by then, get around to a re-release (some years down the line), new standard fees have been set. Like Matthew suggested. That would potentially solve all our problems. Btw, I've hit upon the first real major hospital case of the set...
Mike, you won't be buying it because it's shot on VT? A lot of shows are shot on VT, no big deal. I'm just baffled the value people put on the music. I think if you asked the WKRP actors, what made you sign on to do the show, the scripts or the songs... I think that one's a given.
Hmm, it's a matter of taste really. Film is good for films IMO, because it distances you and lets you be entertained, VT is great for sitcoms and drama because it involves you more due to the 'live' feeling. Look at Great Britain, their whole history of TV production is maybe 80% VT, and not a...
As it is now, I will buy zero copies. Zilch.
A key part? A key part? Oh come on, is the music really that important to the stories? Of course not. I thought this was a comedy show, y'know, as in funny lines and funny characters, not 6 seconds of soundbites of songs. Isn't it rather selfish to...
NO, shooting on film would've made it too expensive to include famous rock songs, that's how I understand it judging by the article, so they opted for VT. I'm glad they did actually, film is all wrong for a sitcom IMO.
George, you don't get it. This may be the only chance others have to see it, and besides, the characters aren't 'horrificly insulted' by the edits, they're very minor and don't alter or hurt the characters overall in the least. Now even you should realize this, somewhere deep down inside, the...
Love's a funny thing, shown in funny ways... I don't see how we support the show by boycotting it, and depriving others the chance to fall in love with these amazing characters.
Odd about the licensing, yes. But it's here now. If this release is a 'testing the waters' release, to see if the interest is there, we have two choices; have the show (maybe) disappear forever into oblivion or put our pride aside and buy it. What it all comes down to, is how much do you love...
But George, dedicated fans most likely already have the original episodes, why would they go that route. If we want it on DVD, we'll have to settle for this imitation, new fans anyway. They won't go and buy expensive dupes. Call the set crap when you've seen it, the commentaries are actually a...
Music replacement aside, it should be remembered that 99% (or 98%) of the jokes/dialogue is still present, there for new fans to savor for all time. I say that's the better of two evils, when the alternative is dusting away in a vault forever, at least it's out there now. Tattered and battered...
Saw the Jennifer date episode, the new song works, but "Hot Blooded" was funnier of course. The radio contest songs work too, no one could tell what they were anyway. Wonder how the Foreigner repalcement could surprise Wilson, now knowing the cost of clearing the music, I think it's fair to say...
Why would that be gone, because of the Tupperware name? That's a silly cut then, but I still say the set is worth it, but I haven't seen the whole thing yet. I saw "Love Returns", but didn't notice anything gone there either(?) The cuts are IMO indeed seamless, if these things can pass one by...
I've seen all but one episode on the first disc now, and I don't mean to sound like a Fox fanboy, but this set is not as bad as people say. Heck, most negative people probably haven't even seen it yet, and I'm having a blast with it. The replaced music is not great but okay, it's done...
Yes, and it's very important that we make passionate notice of cuts etc., but Joe Six Pack doesn't care about that, and even less if he's unfamiliar with the show. It's still going to be a new show to him, so I can actually understand Hugh Wilson 'selling out' here. In a perverse way, it can...
For what it's worth, I just watched the first two episodes and can attest the musical changes therein are done very smoothly, unless you know the original music you won't care one bit. Good seeing it on DVD, must admit I had a great time, LMAO. Granted, that's only two episodes seen, but hey, at...
I got my set today, looking forward to see the damage for myself. Knowing that it's a potential big seller, if we assume for a moment it'll do well, anyone think Fox will revisit the series later with more care and songs cleared?
A limited number of uncut sets, at a very high price, and see how well they sold. That's what they shouldv'e done, and I'd gladly pay in the neighborhood of $100-$170 for that. To the indifferent casual fans, the $25 cut sets will be sufficient. :)
Personally, I couldn't care less if Dr. Fever plays Ted Nugent or some anonymous doodling, for a show about rock radio I care surprisingly little about the music. The songs play second fiddle, I love it for the comedy. I doubt Fox will treat the subsequent seasons any differently, it's a shame...
I'm well aware Jump is dead, but he's still the uncrowned king of WKRP, IMHO. I'm not so sure he'd say 'don't buy', does anyone here know how the WKRP actors felt/feel about the syndicated versions?
