"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

Be careful judging sharpness issues with still screen captures. I'm noticing some jaggy edges on the R2 screen capture. Take a look at Cratchit's ear and collar. They both exhibit jagged edges not found on the R1 screen capture. I'm wondering if some artificial sharpness filters were applied...

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

Screencaps are a bit tricky, and I can say that when I play the movie in my standard DVD player and display it on the HTDV, things look a lot sharper than what is seen here. They are just "lossy" jpeg files afterall, so really they're just to give an *idea* of how the film looks. Harry

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

I've uploaded a few jpeg screen captures from the new restored release of A CHRISTMAS CAROL. First is the previously missing scene of the hand grabbing the book from the shelf: These two of the Cratchit family at the table represent the way the film sometimes lapses into a...

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

On the 4:3 restored version, the opening is complete. It starts with a nice long Renown Pictures logo and goes properly to the library books and the hand removing the one book. Music is intact. I didn't look at the 16:9 version but it's probably the same in that regard - the 4:3 color version...

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

My copy shipped yesterday but hasn't gotten to the homestead yet. It's coming in a package that also has the next VOYAGE TO THE BOTTOM OF THE SEA along with it. Hopefully I'll get it in the next day or so. Harry

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

All of my responses in this thread have been in reference to this release of this title. And basically my position has been that though I'm firmly for OAR releases, I'm not getting my "knickers in a twist" over the fact that the DVD producers will be supplying altered versions as well. For me...

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

Fully agreed and adhered to. It doesn't mean I cannot also appreciate other ways of looking at something, as long as the intended way has been preserved and made available as well. In this case we're getting three different versions. The standard, a widescreen version and a colorized version...

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

Thanks for the diagnosis, but really, I'm fine. I still prefer the regular old Academy ratio black & white, and am thrilled that they're improving this fine title. The other "odd" presentations are like curiosities - something to sample once in a while and move on back to the "real thing". The...

"A CHRISTMAS CAROL/SCROOGE" 1951 Alastair Sim on DVD

This is truly exciting - with this title, the Louis Jordan COUNT DRACULA coming, THE FUGITIVE TV series making it to DVD finally, it's becoming a fabulous year. I think the "optional" 16x9 enhancement is just as valid as the "colorized" enhancement, and as long as the original 1.33:1 film is...
